Here in South Texas they just annouced that a local high school will be closed thursday because student is suspected of having swine flu and they have cancelled all inter high school sports.

I guess next will be curfews and then FEMA camps. This bug doesn't even have to be all that lethal to make the stock market crash, I would be pulling my money out now, this economy can't take another big hit.

I've seen some of those maps that show simulations of a pandemic. They have shown them on TV and the maps show the spread over 30 or 40 days.
Does anyone have a link? I've looked and can't find one.

They roll around every year in one form or another. No big deal at all. The planet is overpopulated anyways, these things need to happen.

Investment tip: put money into companies that make those face mask air filters, they're going to see a big boost in business if this keeps going.

I coach my son's t-ball team.  Just before the game yesterday, I got a call that one of my players and the mother had the flu.  They had been tested, waiting to see the results.

I believe this is a little media driven, as usually common sense/precautions prevail: if you're sick...see a doctor.

You don't see the doctor if you have the flu. All he will tell you is get bed rest and drink lots of water.

The over prescription of antibiotics is just as potentially dangerous as a pandemic is. You do not want a flu virus that is resistant to antibiotics.

Common sense equals not going to the doctor if you're simply sick. The potential for swine flu, yeah, see your doc.

But c'mon - you'd have to be an idiot to see a doctor because you have the flu in any other circumstances.

I guess I'm an idiot then.  If I am sick, I go to a doctor, get a shot, and am back at work the next day...rather missing work for a week.

Since usually charge per hour at work, the cost/benefit of going to a doctor is an easy decision for me.

You get a shot?

You do realise that he is giving you a weaker strain of the flu virus, that you should have gotten before becoming sick?

That way your own immune system fights the weakened strain and you keep the anti-bodies of your own system. Giving you a shot after you have the flu is pointless in the extreme.

Get the shot before you get sick and you won't miss any work. You'll have a very minor cold for a day or two that won't put you out of work.

You're making the assumption I didn't get a flu shot already.

The idea is - if you are sick enough to go to a doctor, well then the doctor better fricking do something beside "take a nap and drink some water".  That's a shitty doctor in my book.  Now, if the doc is giving you shit medicine, well that's a shitty doctor also.  BUT, I do know that doctors are usually well trained, using methods that are thousands of years old.  I tend to trust them.

And besides that:

So what does the second shot contain exactly?

And if you do have a flu or the common cold, the doctor isn't going to do much other than prescribe rest if he knows what he is doing.

I don't get it. First they say the longer it goes on, the less it is (most likely) to cause any serious trouble - but then they say the exact opposite.

If it evolves rapidly to a more virulent form that causes death in the majority of the infected, then eventually it will kill off all the hosts it needs for transmission.  That being said, the longer the virus is allowed to bounce around the population without destroying the hosts the better chance the virus has to adapt and create a deadlier strain (that could then destroy the majority of hosts needed to transmit to others).  They are essentially noting the two most likely paths the virus could take.

Eh, I know. But I was just trying to figure how it becomes "less dangerous" in long run because in long run, after all, it becomes deadlier.

Mmh... nevermind. I write it tomorrow. No time now.

Well if your crappy border with Mexico wasn't doing enough harm already, it's gonna probably be even moreso now. On the upside, this might be something that forces your government to treat the border more seriously.

I wonder if when the Pig flu hits San Franisco if it will have a higher mortality rate because of large number of people infected with AIDS.

I image this shit would go through African population pretty quick too.  Perhaps this is natures way to tell us we have over-populated the world.  IMO the world is due for a 700 - 1300 million human kill off.

I am going to rent " I am legend " this weekend to get my wife freaked out about it. I have already start coughing and hacking in my cubical to freak out the people around me.

If you can't have fun during a pandemic, then you aren't trying.

It would be more polite to simply say "immuno-comprised population."  Influenza IS one of the causes of death for the immuno-compromised (including those who have AIDS).  The flu has always been hardest on the very young, the very old, and those whose immune systems are impared in some way.

That being said, this is just a new, pretty bad strain of  the flu; the scariest thing about it is that the flu vaccine does not affect it.  Hundreds of thousands of people each year are killed by the normal, everyday flu we have always had around. Granted, the 'pandemics' tend to make it much worse up to 10 times as bad.   I am just not quite sure if we are up to panic levels yet.
