The family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has charged the foundation building a monument to the civil rights leader on the National Mall about $800,000 for the use of his words and image — an arrangement one leading scholar says King would have found offensive.

The memorial — including a 28-foot sculpture depicting King emerging from a chunk of granite — is being paid for almost entirely with private money in a fundraising campaign led by the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation. The monument will be turned over to the National Park Service once it is complete.

King would have been "absolutely scandalized by the profiteering behavior of his children," Garrow said.

According to financial documents reviewed by The Associated Press, the foundation paid $761,160 in 2007 to Intellectual Properties Management Inc., an entity run by King's family. Documents also show a "management" fee of $71,700 was paid to the family estate in 2003.

Care to look at the other end of the spectrum?

Guess how much his family have received for the use of his mug on shirts, posters, placards and well, mugs...

(am I the only one going to try some debate in this thread :p)

Two of Ernesto "Che" Guevara's children said Thursday they were tired of seeing their father's image used to sell everything from T-shirts to vodka, calling the growth of the revolutionary as a global super-brand "embarrassing."

Aleida Guevara, the eldest of Guevara's four children by his second wife, Cuban revolutionary Aleida March, said the commercialization of her father's image contributed to tension between rich and poor in some countries.

"Something that bothers me now is the appropriation of the figure of Che that has been used to make enemies from different classes. It's embarrassing," she wrote during an Internet forum sponsored by Cuba's government ahead of what would have been her father's 80th birthday on June 14.

Aleida Guevara was asked about the use of her father's image to sell British vodka and French soft drinks. She decried those campaigns as well one in Switzerland that uses his likeness to peddle cell phones.

"We don't want money, we demand respect," wrote Guevara, who is a trained physician like her father.

I'm talking about a long drawn out rant about how I hate things that spans several paragraphs. Either that or a rant about how much in love I'm n that spans several paragraph. Meh I'll pick later. Back on topic.

MLK is probably really pissed off right now even though he is dead.

Typical entitlement attitude. Nothing like cashing in on the efforts of others. I wonder who they voted for in this last election.

they are not really charging the government since its almost entirely paid with private money.

Sad, but hardly surprising.

Despite the good their father fought (and died) for, his children apparently dodged the "decent human being" genes their father had an abundance of.

Some of the most recent money-grabbing schemes of the remaining King clan:
  • Attempting to auction off their father's private papers (which they had previously withheld from the public unless the public wished to pay a fee). These papers, including an early draft of the "I Have a Dream" speech were spared from auction when a group of philanthropists banded together and paid off the King children to the tune of $32 million.
  • Demanding millions in "licensing fees" for campaign paraphernalia (mostly homemade) linking their father to then-candidate Barack Obama.
  • Hurling lawsuits at one another over their parents' estate after Coretta Scott King died in 2006.

Most recently, two of the children are suing a third over the rights to their mother's papers. Since there is a multi-million dollar book deal linked to the papers, you can see the motivation.

The King children's lack of decency is so massive, its almost impressive.

Impressively disgusting.

Wouldn't be surprised if they started demanding reoyalties every Martin Luther King Day.

Edit:I suck at coding
