In the wake of a school massacre in March in which 16 died, a courthouse shooting and numerous other gun deaths, all political parties have agreed the rules need to be severely tightened. There are ten million registered guns in the country and an estimated 10 million more illegal ones.

In addition to a centralised federal weapons register, officials want “biometric security” barriers for gun vaults and technology that would limit the use of pistols and revolvers to their owners.

Tim Kretschmer, 17, killed 15 people before shooting himself in a bloodbath at his former school near Stuttgart last month.

“There are interesting technical possibilities,” said interior minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who is in talks with hunting groups and target-shooting associations.

Last week, a 60-year-old gunman opened fire in a courtroom in Bavaria, killing his sister-in-law and then himself in what police described as an inheritance dispute among seven siblings. Police say the shooter had a gun license.

Ooooooo

Might take a while to implement it all, wouldnt it?

Like the idea though.

What if the person planning a massacre owns the gun?

Germany decided to have lax gun laws from the "beginning" and now they're somewhat paying for it, just like the USA, you can't do much about it now without resorting to some crazy shit

Just deal with it cos there ain't shit you can do now

Nothing like poorly conceived and written reactionary legislation to show that you are on the ball as a politician.

Mek, is anything short of a ban "lax" to you?

While I don't like the idea of government forcing people to store their property in a certain way, biometric safe technology is actually a good idea.

So, IMO
Idea: GREAT
Mandatory laws: not so great.

Doesn't really make any sense does it? At least, until a massacre happens that's instigates with a stolen gun. And even then, what's wrong with a regular lock?

I don't think they said "illegal," just "uregistered." Unless Germany has a mandatory policy for registration of all firearms, the two are not synonymous.

It is mandatory. Meaning legal action will be taken against you if you're caught with an unregistered weapon.

There is no avoiding the fact the vast majority of massacres are carried out with legally held guns.
Better locks aren't going to help.

In our (target shooting) club we quietly discourage people from having high capacity automatics or playing Rambo on the range.

Gun control here in Northern Ireland is understandably tight. (Although I could buy a handgun within a few hours if I really wanted to)
We have to have a gun locker. Its bolted to the wall from the inside. Your only allowed one key and that key stays with the permit holder. You can give a spare to be kept the police station in case you loose it. My dad is the licence holder. The key is on his person at all times. He gets spot checks. Cops land at his door. He has to produce the key off his person. Can't be hid in the house. Every few years we have to spend 2 hours with a fire arms officer who we have to walk around the land which we do vermin control on. Plus he basically judges your personality, everything and he can tear up your licence right there and then if he wants to. He makes sure we know our backdrops etc. If you need a gun you get it. If you demonstrate that you need a big gun (for deer control etc) you get it. If you are a politician or ex services and you have a need for a side arm you get it. Everything is judged on a case by case basis. No wide ranging laws, where you are entitled to a gun. You have to demonstrate every few years why you need a gun. Guns laying about ppls house for fanboy purposes and penis extending reasons are the guns that get misused.
I think thumb print is taking it too far. How much would something like that cost. Making guns more for the rich the more extreme with the control they have. Countries seam to go from little control to extreme control and nothing in the middle. Ppl should look at how we do it here. Seriously, half the country wants to shoot the other half and the country is awash with guns and we have been good bar a few exceptions, lately.

All you smaller countries really don't understand.. I don't own a gun, I don't want to own a gun, but in the US a lot of our population survives from hunting.

I know this is about Germany, but you still can have the logic if more people had guns this wouldn't have happened. Besides there are plenty of stabbings and other murders that occur all over the place, bottom line is if you're going to go nuts and kill people you're going to do it. Can't wait till 10 years down the road we start reading about 3-5 people being killed by police officers and the population can't do anything to prevent it.

Honestly with the way the shitty economy is, I was considering filing for a fire arm permit the other day.. But on the flip side with gun registration, those people will be the first to go in a new world order Era.

Gun control should be like it is in N.Ireland, as JahMan said. it works very well. plus the cops are all armed.
