I say let the shipping companies hire contract protection.  They can shadow the vessels in their own boat, and at they can break off when the ship finally makes it to the coastal waters of whatever country they are headed.  This would fix the issue of weapons inspections at the ports, and the ship owners insurance company wouldn't have a fit.

Three amazing shots.
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/afric … breakdown/

When the pirates first boarded their vessel, a tussle ensued, during which one of the crewmen stabbed the pirate in the hand. Four days later, the pirate's departure from the lifeboat to accept U.S. medical help -- and try to negotiate the captive's release -- left only three for the U.S. snipers to keep their eyes on.

The three were "tired," Gortney said. "The sea state was picking up. They agreed for us to tow them into little better waters as the ship was bouncing around. It was very tense."

The pirates had repeatedly threatened to kill Phillips, Gortney said.

A Navy SEAL team had parachuted in and taken up positions on the Bainbridge's back deck.

The military had orders from President Obama authorizing lethal force if there was imminent danger.
They were bouncing around quite a bit.

Yeah, let us drag you into more stable waters so we can get better shots on you!

P.S. Anyone know if there are videos of this? Might be a little gruesome, but I'd still like to see it all go down; would be very impressive to watch.

Drag shots.
All head shots. In the dark.
Three gunshots. All three fatal. Fired in the dark by three specially trained U.S. Navy SEALs as the pirates' boat rocked in the water off Somalia.

"Phenomenal shots -- 75 feet away," said Navy Vice Adm. Bill Gortney, who oversees the region.

A senior defense official told CNN that each was a shot to the head.

You didn't get the BF2 reference to skilled BF2 snipers using drag shots to get headshots on moving targets.

Yeah, like Blackwater.  It's a little different when you are in the middle of the ocean, than in a crowded town full of civies.  When these boats come at you, you know they are armed and their intentions are hostile.  They are the only target for hundreds, if not thousands of miles.  Pretty hard to kill civilians in such a case.

Even those idiots would be hard pressed to screw it up.

Intelligence like we had to invade Iraq with?
Boy that's going to be milked for decades. It's as if all intelligence (actually designed to prevent collateral) will forever be null and void. The irony of course being that the failures in Iraq have indeed caused more scrutiny in the intelligence gathering community.
Im sure it will be as well I actually admire just how good the agencies are, Im sure what we hear in the news about foiled plots is barely scratching the surface, i.e. the so called Easter-bombings just this week in England. Its like anything else: a few scar the many.
However, getting into what could potentially be another war, in another part of the world (where you have been before) is surely not what we need right now, considering just how expensive it is, and what our countries need to sort out in the current.

I don't think anyone is advocating a regime change in a regime less country. I do believe that there needs to be an international consorted effort to protect against further piracy in international waters. Too often we are quick to blame the victimization on the response and not those who actually initiated the response. We have assisted in helping the governments of Central America in taking on their lawlessness without an invasion. I don't think full scale war is needed here neither. If we don't address this now, and we keep losing tankers (one was carrying $100 million in oil) it's going to get expensive too.

I don't know what the proper response is. But I do know we will need all the intelligence we can gather before deciding.

Put a group of snipers on each boat or a squad of like 5 soldiers to protect them. Fire on the boat if it gets to close after getting a couple of warnings. Should be enough and they should say it in their language too. If possible.

Don't see why we should care for these pirates who steal a multi-billion worth vessel with contents that's worth several billions too. Then they demand a ransom and they keep repeating this every now and then even thou they now have an income of like 6 million a year.

I also don't see how they seriously thought that the other countries wouldn't do a thing to them or just let them get away with this when they charge with weapons. Yea um you are pirates, prepare to die for it too you know. It's not all drink and sailing.

When they find out that those soldiers are enough to protect it they are most likely gonna quit because I doubt that they can aim well in their little boat compared to the people on the tanker because it's like being on land. They might also value their life a bit more too.

Someone had better not tell the Somalis about setting a foot-pedal detonator.  If they know they're going to be shot for taking hostages, they might just take precautions to ensure the prisoner dies if they do, whether or not the person who kills the prisoner was alive while doing so.

Shooting the pirates was neat, but has moved the whole thing to a new level.  Starting to bomb ports might go too far.

The pirates have declared they're going to kill French and American sailors?

hmm..  not alot of ransom money to be had from dead sailors..  probably not a good business plan.

And, a small bit of advice for the pirates;
Do not get involved in a killing contest with the USMC & Navy SEALs - they're better at it than any skinny pirate could ever dream of.

Agreed

They need to stop messing with the Americans, because if they continue that way military action will happen and they won't have anymore boats. So unless they want to swim after the supertankers I suggest they keep there heads cool. I would say they should stop, but knowing they wont...

offtopic but how did you get your thing to say "American" and have the flag? Is that a photoshopped avatar that makes it look like a donator, mod or something?

It's just his avatar.  You can tell because the text bar is too long (and also because the mods would never make something as ridiculous as that).

Also, badges go below the stats.
