Correction: 4GB is plenty for gaming on Vista at the moment.dill13 wrote:

It won't be long before games start to need more than 4GB to get the best performance out of them (like, you know how BF2 will run OK on 1GB, but better on 2GB).
There is absolutely no point in getting over 4GB for C2D/C2Q PC.

Yeah. I can imagine many reasons to get more than 4GB.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Unless you do some serious HD video editing, there is pretty much no performance difference.Scorpion0x17 wrote:

If you want to run Vista without swapping, and still being able to do RAM-intense tasks, 4GB is the least you should have.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

My laptop has, after about half a week of uptime since last reboot, 1.2GB in RAM and 2.3GB in swap.

4GB is enough for vista. 8GB is overkill.

8GB will be standard way before a C2D/C2Q CPU is considered underpowered enough to not take advantage of it. Time has proven that many times before.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

be my quest and all go buy 8GB but it just isn't needed for a good whileFreezer7Pro wrote:

What we're trying to say is that you will be better off with 8GB some time into the future, and that a Core 2 Duo will not be very outdated by then.
- Rod Elliot, ESP
yeah it is always like that. But I wouldn't rush out and get 8GB and hold breath till you will see the benefits. Ram requirements have been staying around same for some time now and there isn't any major change coming soon.Freezer7Pro wrote:

Some time? It's barely a year since 2GB was standard.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

And a C2D/Q will still not be outdated when 8GB comes around.

explain what is going to double ram usage in next 12 months.Freezer7Pro wrote:

edit: even the notorious memory eater Crysis didn't take 3GB total with a good collection of stuff on background

A home PC with a C2D will last for another three years with no problems. Five if you're not into supar gaymen.
RAM dependency tends to increase faster than CPU requirements. When I bought my P4 3GHz, I got 512MB RAM with it. I then got another 512, and I even went to 2GB before upgrading it. That's four times the RAM in merely two years. When I first got my C2D, I had 2GB. That 2GB is now 4GB, and in not all too long, it will be even more.

now you have missunderstood me completely wrong when I said its not worth it to slap over 4GB on C2Q.
Its not going to show much benefits near future. I didn't say C2Q is gonna be outdated in 12 months.
i7 with massive memory bandwidth shows big gains from going 3GB to 6GB, unlike C2D going from 4GB to 8GB.
edit: when you read all my posts you see I never talked about C2Q getting outdated. I dunno were you took that to this discussion.
