A lot of discussion lately around here has been popping up due to the name change of the Freedom Tower. Originally planned to be called that, it's been changed to "One World Trade Center".

NEW YORK – Even without the name, the symbolism of the Freedom Tower as an American response to the Sept. 11 terror attacks was hard to miss.

The original architect designed a twisting form he wanted to imitate the Statue of Liberty, with a spire that rose to the deliberate height of 1,776 feet to recognize the year of American independence. Politicians called the tower proof of the country's triumph over terrorism.

Former Gov. George Pataki said visitors to the iconic skyscraper "will know our determination to overcome evil" in a 2003 speech that first gave the Freedom Tower its name.

The tower — still under construction with a projected completion date of 2013 — no longer has the same architect, design or footprint on the 16-acre site. And this week, the owners of ground zero publicly parted ways with the Freedom Tower name, saying it would be more practical to market the tallest building in New York as the former north tower's name, One World Trade Center.

Critics called the name drop an unpatriotic shedding of symbolism by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Some newspaper editorials blasted the agency for years of missed deadlines and changing plans for the site.

So, what do you think? Is simply changing the name to "One World Trade Center" (which, imo, insinuates that we're doing what we should have done in the first place, and that's rebuild the towers) unpatriotic?

no, methinks the freedom tower name came from a time when patriotism (jingoism?) was quite a bit more alive in the country

besides, it's the PANYNJ's building, they can name it whatever the hell they want

Your karma's really, really ironic right now.

But yes, I agree...and the name change, like I said, insinuates progression and the fact that we're moving on. It'll never be forgotten, just like Pearl Harbor...but we need to move on.

It's better than the name will be back to what it once was, shows more resilience. Anything can be considered unpatriotic these days, and what do you care anyway you people constantly think that places like NYC etc.. aren't part of the "real" America

edit: Not you personally, you as in those people that would consider the name change unpatriotic

in any case, the design is now so far from the original freedom tower that it wouldn't really merit the name freedom tower anymore

plus, we'll all call it the world trade center anyway (knowing the MTA, they won't change the subway signs even if they have to)

Didn't they already start the construction of the freedom tower, at least all the underground stuff. I thought they started a while back, how can it be so drastically changed? So what does this new building look like?

And I'm guessing it won't be 1776 feet tall either

Looks like the patriot fad has died down indeed

to put it bluntly, it originally looked nice

the NYPD asked the building to be moved further away from the west side highway, just to keep it a safe distance away from car bombs. then the design was reworked for more office space (good move, i guess)

keep in mind, there's been approximately 6 years since the first design was chosen, and the actual laying of any structural steel

for comparison

Tbh One World Trade Centre as a name is going to send the conspiracy dudes over-the-top-nuts with all the talk of globalization and centralising power going on right now.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

What a horrible name. Yeah call it the Freedom Tower, I think the history of that area in NYC suits it.

Where is this tower gonna be, because apparently where the old two towers once stood, there will be a memorial.

Like so

So I'm guessing the tower is going to be somewhere next to the original location.

wait I found this pic:

Patriotism these days is just some bullshit marketing phrase thrown around by Republicans. 'Freedom Tower' is a stupid fucking name.

I don't care about the name at this point. It's gonna be amazing to look at from Liberty Island.

Most of what I was going to say was said already, but here's some new cynicism: Appending "freedom" to anything under the sky is arrogant and the worst type of patriotism. The fact we're even worrying about the name shows how not free we are.

Also, what happens if the "Freedom Tower" falls? I doubt the voting majority of the US has the capacity to comprehend the metaphor but I'm sure Fox will sensationalize it for them.

I think both names suck.

Kinda off topic: I can't really imagine the twin towers on the sky line anymore. I've forgotten what it was like.
