Just announced at this year's GDC, OnLive is an on-demand gaming service. It's essentially the gaming version of cloud computing - everything is computed, rendered and housed online. In its simplest description, your controller inputs are uploaded, a high-end server takes your inputs and plays the game, and then a video stream of the output is sent back to your computer. Think of it as something like Youtube or Hulu for games.

You really don't need to update your computer because it plays high end games only through your internet connection. They have high end servers processing the stuff. The console is only $50-100 when it comes out in December. It includes playing games that you don't have the consoles to play with.

I have enough problems with lag without them having to send video as well.

I just like the step in the direction that you don't really need to keep on upgrading your PC to play certain games you just need a good connection. Also being able to play games that belong to specific console is interesting. If it works it would be groundbreaking. Of course we will see more detail in the coming months.

I still prefer using mouse/keyboard over controller on most games, i do use a 360 controller for my PC as well but only for GTA4 tbh otherwise the idea doesn't look thought through

What if they had a keyboard/mouse as an add-on?

Yeah that will be an issue. I am excited at the idea and in a short number of years you will get something better. We'll see how it goes though.

Lag shouldn't be that much of an issue, it only needs to handle a 720p video signal and some basic control inputs, I play games all the time while people are streaming HD videos on the laptop and I only have an 8Mb line.

He did say in the video you will run fine 1.2Mb (as a standard Wii graphics format). I am guessing from what they say that their server can handle all the data, so main problem overall would be solved. Curious about their service.

It would be the first that you can now rent PC games when it comes out as well.

this year's GDC is fuuuuuuuuuucking disappointing so far

I like the idea, but I'm not sure if it could be implemented so well. As others have said - what about lag?

Controller input lag would be too much. At the end of the day, information can only travel as fast as light. Which when it comes to distances between client and server isn't fast enough for something like controller inputs. Surely.

Not to mention the processing time, however short, would only be put ontop of the physical distance between client and server in terms of lag.

It's a good idea but I'm not too sure it would work in the real world, speed of light is fast, but still not ....fast enough, you could say. That's why no matter what you'll always get lag playing in servers in Australia if you're in Europe and nothing will ever change that

Correct me if I'm wrong

Not to mention if this takes off the price of high end Video cards and the like will skyrocket.

(Less demand, less people buying new parts as soon as they come out will result in increased prices to try and cover the loss of profit).

Besides, the last thing you want in this economical climate is people spending less.
