Hola

Computer will be for primarily photoshop (might a little gaming in there, but doubt it). Would a decent quad core and a say, 8600 GT be good for CS3, and in the future CS4? I know a quad core is better for photoshopping, but if he gets CS4, which has GPU acceleration, would the 8600 be beefy enough to give a noticeable performance increase?

EDIT: Total budget is $400 US, no OS or CD drive needed (not sure if he needs a monitor yet, hoping not)

Forget the quad core and get a better GPU if he is on a budget.

A good dual core and 8800gt or higher would be better imo.

afaik CS4 GPU acceleration is limited to zooming and rotating. I'd drop all money into the CPU and stick with onboard video.

While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Or just pick up an extremely cheap 6600GT or something

Or something from the ATi 3000 line in place of the 7900? I saw those cards for like $30 on New Egg, IIRC.

Thanks for help, guys. Karmaz <3

Gonna go with Q6600 or something close and 7900-8600 GT (because of the possible gaming), since the rest of the build is turning out to be fairly cheap

Something like that try to get the open box of that card its 20 some dollars cheaper.
Edit: Unless he needs peripherals. Man is shipping expensive in the US.

That processor is too weak for what he is going to be doing, he needs a higher clock speed on a dual core or a quad core.

I have the E5200, clocked at 3.6Ghz, and it never stutters on Photoshop, CS3 or 4.

Also, the 4670 never has any .. framerate drop, I suppose, on CS4, and at £60 (I have this exact one) you can't go wrong, is ace for gaming too, although it's better at high resolutions than AA.
