So there's one special day in Hoboken, it comes way before the other St Pat's day. There's a parade, lines on bars, and it's really actually a train wreck.. So this year I found out something very special about this day, not cause it happened to me cause I do avoid that place like the plague. But Ticket prices issued by police officers are 1000 dollars, for open bottles, public drunkenness and other usual low level fines. So they issued out 375 of these bad boys on Saturday which turns into 750k that could be used for better purpose.. This is just one of those fines that are actually bankrupting our already unstable economy..

Which brings me to the stranglehold which is our fine system..

Woah shit, that's a pretty hefty fine. Do they usually fine you for public drunkenness, or just on this unnamed special day?

Unfortunately I can answer that yes, you get fined around $100.  Sometimes you have to take an 8 hour Alcohol class too (that costs about $50).

What happens if you're not from the States? Can you escape paying it, or do they eject you from the country? Do I need to be exceedingly careful where I'm drunk and disorderly?

I don't know if you're not from the states.. It's for the one day, for now, but 1000 dollars holy crap. That's equal to at least one weeks pay check for normal folks...

I imagined what it would be like if public drunkness was fineable in Finland.

That would be a intresting

375 tickets at $1000 each is 375,000, not 750k... Right?
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

i am sure it didnt start out at 1k.  prolly because they felt the fines in years past didnt stop anything, so hike it up and see what happens.  maybe we should get ALL sides of the story, not just take cpt.asses side.

Fair enough.

over here on st pats day the psni aren't going to do much, unless violence breaks out. Simply put, too much of the country is going to be drunk for them to do anything

there has to be a reason they did this.  something must have happened.  or too many people complained and they raised the fine.  see, democracy in action.

tbf it could be something as simple as the police wanting more money. They do that in the UK too, it's called 'Speed Cameras'

It's probably because the good people in Hoboken are giong bankrupt, well at least the corrupt political system is.. Last year they couldn't even finish out the budget. It's a very expensive and desirable town to live in and it's only one square mile.. I honestly don't know how they can't budget themselves out properly with the property tax that they have and the amount of money in fines they make in parket tickets a month.. I've heard they bring in close to 2 mill a month in parking tickets..

Every one in Hoboken knows to stear clear of the parade, and no one I know actually goes to it.. It is a mess and an easy mess to fix, instead of saturday you can move it to sunday. People won't get as trashed if they have to work the next day.. But instead they use it to fill in the gaps..

One square mile with

Population in July 2007: 40,551. Population change since 2000: +3.1%

And a blown up and stable home value.. Plus all the building that people are doing in it, there is no way the amount of income coming in and the amount of money needed to keep it running is that out of wack

$1000 for an open bottle of beer?

If I'm at a friends house and having a few beers and we are then walking to the pub. I take a beer for the walk and put it in the bin when I'm done. A local cop wouldn't dare tell me I couldn't have a fucking beer in my own town street. Even tho its an offence, the cops only target the kids who are drinking and wreaking the place.
I was at a Summer raft race picnic thing at our harbour. Belfast cops were on duty. Families sitting having a picnic, eating and drinking a glass of wine were hassled and one guy who refused to bin his expensive bottle of wine got arrested. These ppl where business men and respectable families who are the money and driving force in our economy. Treated like fucking degenerate kids. These type of laws only infringe upon decent ppls freedom.
Since they brought in the no drinking on the streets law these kids have started breaking into houses to drink, to get off the streets. While ppl are on holiday and then wreaking their houses. At least 3 houses were burned by the wee fuckers last year.

These type of laws might be designed to curb asshole drunks. But they are then used on law abiding citizens.

Used to be, if you where an asshole drunk in my town the cops would lift you, take to the station, hammer your head to a pulp and release you. Or worse, the IRA would lift them and put a bullet through each knee. I do miss some aspects of the troubles.
