Obama has rejected a gift given to George Bush by the UK immediately following 9/11.  The gift was a bust of Winston Churchill.  Why has he done this?  Also during Gordon Brown's recent visit with Obama they exchanged gifts as is usual protocal.  Obama gave Brown a gift basket with 25 videos in it that won't even play in the UK.  Gordon Brown gave Obama a pen made from the wood of the HMS Gannet which is the sister ship of the HMS Resolute.  Why this is significant:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resolute_desk [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Gannet_(1878)

The story:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldne … itain.html

Now I can only read into this one way.  Obama hates everything Churchill stood for.  Here are some quotes from Churchill:http://jpetrie.myweb.uga.edu/bulldog.html

What kind of message is Obama trying to send to the UK, and thusly the US.  Makes you wonder why he hates Churchill so much.

American politicians have made quoting Churchill, whose mother was American, something of an art form, but not Mr Obama, who prefers to cite the words and works of his hero Abraham Lincoln. Indeed a bust of Mr Lincoln now sits in the Oval Office where Epstein's Churchill once ruled the roost.
First of all, it was a loan. Second, it was given to Bush. And thirdly Obama would rather have a bust of Lincoln inside the Oval office than an ex-British PM. I would have thought as an American you'd be proud of point number three.

Because he was short, fat and ugly and I imagine that a bust of such a man would be less than aesthetically pleasing; probably not a favourite curiosity to display on the mantle piece.

Now a pen-holder made from the wood of the Gannet has historical significance, practical application and was likely polished to a high sheen, thus making it a favourable addition to anybody's collection of stuff as a practical curiosity that is aesthetically pleasing. Unlike the bust of an angry British midget.

Yes it was a gift.  Obama offered to give it back to the UK.  They said they would like him to keep it.  He said no.  Now it sits in the UK consulate office.  So the UK trys to find the perfect gift for Obama.  They give him a pen made from the sister ship of the HMS Resolute.  Which also happened to be a Anti-slave ship.  So what does that mean?

Conspiracy nuts still say the bank of England and the rothchilds control everything.

We all know it was bankers that fucked everything up. Maybe he is making first moves at severing ties.

You're right it means nothing.

Maybe it is actually a sign that he can't stand what Churchill stood for.  As a head of state you don't try to send a gift of that magnitude back.  It is bad diplomacy.  Giving the Prime Minister of the UK a selection of videos is just stupid.  The man can't even see out of one eye and has 30% vision in the other.  The gift Brown gave to Obama was a well thought out gift.  Obama is either horribly inept in the Diplomacy department, or he is making a statement.  Your choice.

I do agree that seems very odd. Even if GB was a avid movie buff, sending movies as a diplomatic gift seems crap to the extreme. The pen is a really good gift on the other hand. I have to wonder as well if there is some kind of message going on here. I mean, if Obama didn't want it he could just move it to another location in the White House were he doesn't have to look at it.

Brown gave Obama some nice presents with a lot of symbolic value and Obama gave him 25 dvds that wont play in dvds in the UK because of the regional codes...  good job to the people in the whitehouse who couldnt even get dvds that would work overseas...  sad...

found this...
"Churchill has less happy connotations for Mr Obama than those American politicians who celebrate his wartime leadership. It was during Churchill's second premiership that Britain suppressed Kenya's Mau Mau rebellion. Among Kenyans allegedly tortured by the colonial regime included one Hussein Onyango Obama, the President's grandfather"

If our diplomatic relations break down because of this, maybe we can borrow Hillary's reset button?

Obviously this will not break down our relations with the UK.  Just wondering if it is some sort of message to them or just plain being poor at Diplomacy.  Maybe he forgot his teleprompter.

P.S. That was a pretty poor gift to the UK, though i would love to know the titles were included, i cant believe there was not more to it that a "crap" simple gift.
