[Photoshop] How do I bend gradients?

This may be a noob question, but I've never figured out how to bend gradients.

I made an image to demonstrate what I want to do.

I want the gradient on the C to look like the bar on the left, dark to light all the way around. I made a sort-of example on what I want it to look like on the right.

You may think "looks like you already know how to do it". Well, no I don't. To make the one on the right, I just copy merged the one on the left and then used the warp tool. If I use the warp tool normally, it just makes it all gay. So...

How do I bend gradients, or conform them to the shape of my image?

No, that's not what I want.

I want it to look like the bar on the right (only in a C, of course). There has to be an easier way than the way I described.

I don't want the C, that's just an example. I just want to know how to bend gradients, or like apply the gradient to the shape of the image.

Oh, actually, I think I see now...

So, using the 'C' as an example, you want one colour on the outer edge and another on the inner edge, with a gradient in-between, yes?

I seem to recall PaintShopPro had/has a 'shape gradient'.

I'm pretty sure there's a way to apply a layer mask or something that will put the gradient to the shape of the image, but I'll be damned if I can figure it out.

Photoshop is a pretty powerful program so, if you can't do that I'd be really disappointed.

Don't know how to do it in Photoshop without doing it manually, but it can be done in Illustrator.

Easy, just use one of the Style presets and jiggle with the settings.

EDIT: You probably only need gradient overlay tbh.

Just make another layer, attach it to the layer of the C, then use a large soft brush and stroke in the gradient with one continuous motion. That would work as well.

That's the look I'm going for, but can you explain a little more?

I make a C with text tool, then go to the blending options and then gradient overlay. Mine looks like the C in the OP though, not like yours. What am I missing?

EDIT: I figured this shit out. Amazingly easy too, wow.

How do you do it then?

Seems you already figured it out, but a different way.

The way TEP described is you just click one of the styles and then you can change the colors or such. At first I didn't know what he meant by styles, but he means the tab on the color palette labeled "styles".
