The short version of my above post:

The 2nd amendment was designed, in part, to ensure a ready supply of trained riflemen if needed for the nation's militia.  Any fool can be taught to pull a trigger - it takes a lifetime of practice to become a truly proficient marksman.

The semi-automatic AR-15 is the civilian counterpart to the military's full-auto M4 and M-16 service rifles.

If I ever had to put on an Army uniform again, i would highly prefer to have a core group of Sergeants with me who knew how to shoot well.

We have traditionally been a "nation of riflemen", and that has served us well in past emergencies.

I'm really curious - why exactly do you NEED an assault rifle?

Shotguns/pistols/rifles I can see why quite easily (and plan to get a shotgun myself for home defense one day)...but assault rifles? Why?

Not trying to stir shit up, just asking.
My friend, the term 'assault rifle' is kinda, pardon the pun, loaded.  But since you ask, the most arguable reason is one is necessary in Katrina type instances.  I live in Florida, it is a reality.  I don't rely on the police (I do like em' though).

Granted any moron can file and alter sear pins or machine specific parts to convert many semi-automatics into fully-automatics.  This is just another stab at larger more restrictive governmental control

I recommend the 'Remington 870 marine magnum' for home defense.  I gave mine to pops for his boat.  Seriously, give it a look.  Me chambering a shell in my duck gun (regular Remmie' 870 express) was enough for an intruder last year.  He decided he didn't want any and retreated outta the yard (and yes he was really advancing at my wife/house until I intervened)

you can put a pistol grip on her.
Well, I suppose I can see why in states like Florida/Louisiana/etc where natural disasters strike pretty much every year or every few years and where really bad ones happen about every 10 years or so (Andrew, Wilma, Charley are the bad ones that I remember). But in states like Indiana/Illinois/New Jersey/Wisconsin/etc? I dunno, I just can't see it. I suppose the term "always be prepared" comes into play though. Anything can happen

Perhaps since I'm in one of the lowest crime-stricken areas in the country with one of the highest paid/best police forces in the country and which only had 3 murders with a population of 1.5 million I can't really see it yet.

Thanks for the suggestion on the shotgun, but I won't be getting one for several years. I remember telling my father that I wanted to get one the minute I bought my own house and he looked at me like I had 4 heads.

Pos was talking about Assault Rifles in specific, and not just all weapons encompassed by the previous ban.

There is no reason for a civilian to carry around an automatic weapon, unless they're drug muscle and use a MAC-10 to keep bustahz from rollin in on their cornahz yo'. But seriously, I still don' know what the point of buying this crap is.

You said you got a 100 round magazine, that's some Light Support Weapon shit. ATG is worried about 12.7 rounds, does he want to stop a car?

I can see if you enjoy hunting and want a bolt-action rifle or a shotgun, or if you live in a bad area and don't feel safe without a piece, but I don't understand why you would want to through your money away at something so excessive.

Unless you got a small dick, that would explain everything.
Your sound like an idiot nice enough guy, lemme try an explain again.

If gunslinger was still around I'd say ask him if he has to hold down the trigger or pull it for every shot on his Mac 10.

As for 50. cal.; the rounds are great for precision shooting, vehicles and buildings. Yes, I feel the need to have that kind of tool. I feel like my life, liberty, freedom and family are threatened. I have no concern whatsoever about islamic nutjobs. I have a great deal of concern about a militarized police force and marxist president and democrat controlled congress.

Yes, that is what I want it for. Again, I will not quibble. These are weapons of war and we need to be prepared for war.  How about a 12.7 bolt action; that be okay with you, slick?

Well, my dick isn't big enough to beat the attackers to death.....  So, again my response is that during a crisis I require one.  Katrina ring a bell?  Roving gangs?  I live in 'Hurricane Land'.  Your lack of imagination is my reality.

I didn't say I got a 100 round (bro did)... However, I did buy a suppressor for my HK USP.   America FUCK YEA!  Actually the bad area I live resulted in a glock.  You and rest assured that I also have a beautiful .300 sako a few years younger than I.  It was for bring down anything Kodiak Alaska could toss at us (and killing it for food/sport).  I'm actually in the process of setting up a Trust/Corporation that I will use to buy fully autos.  They are actually going UP in value.  I'm also going to resume my reloading operation.

Yes Sir.  That 'anything' is called life.  You always have to be prepared.  You friggin' nailed it and me, I'm an Eagle Scout.

I live in the 'rather have and not need' than 'need and not have' world.

It will be your house, your call.  If you buy one, store it in a safe, factor that cost in.  As to Pops?  Heck I dunno, take him skeet shooting.  Bond?

That is what sheep do when one of their fellow sheep start growing teeth.  Sheep don't have teeth; wolves do.  Of course, so do sheepdogs, but sheepdogs and wolves look the same to a sheep.

I live in a state not associated with natural disasters.  We don't have an unbearable crime rate and I'm not expecting the end of the world or our civilization.  I do, however, own "assault" rifles.  and I own them because I can.  Because as a legal, responsible citizen, it's my right.  And in the off chance that our civilization is severely altered, I will be prepared, I will know how to defend myself and my family and I will have the means to do it.  The cops won't be there.  The military won't be there, or won't be there for me.  I don't have Red Dawn fantasies, I'm not looking to wage war.  It just happens that firearms are very handy in certain situations for certain tasks.  And in the mean time, "assault" rifles are fun as fuck to shoot.

Especially when its at a  full 5 gallon bottle of propane sitting in a mine shaft with a small fire burning next to it.

If you formed a local militia and stormed into the Mayors office and shot him, crowned yourself as city officials, you'd all be sent to the electric chair!

My 2 cents.
The 2nd amendment was written at a different time in the nation's history when we were a small little collection of states with a common need for security who had just pissed off the world's most powerful nation as well as have a bunch of super power's colonies surrounding us. We needed a way to defend ourselves quickly if our armies were to fail.

Now if we are talking about a national gun law, I don't support it. Guns are cheap and easy to get in the south compared to the north because of cultural differences between the two. In the North people would not be able to handle easily accessible guns in the south they can. This issue should be left to the states and stricter laws regarding transporting guns across state lines should be enacted.

Is there a good reason to shoot the mayor?  has he declared Droit de seigneur.

Yes, it is sort of sexy when things should blow up after being shot.
