People would like to see Apple expand into the mainstream because they are the only ones in a position to challenge Microshit's monopoly. Some competition wouldn't exactly go amiss for the consumer.

If you're talking solely about competition then Apple doesn't need to expand into the mainstream manually, it can do so automatically by lowering its prices; and from an economic perspective competition means lower profit. They should expand - but I can understand exactly why they don't and to be honest, I don't know which I prefer.

I'd consider that I would have some 'technical knowledge of computers' and I'm happy to say I have a MacBook. Everyone knows that I like aesthetics a lot, but I didn't just buy it for that. In a 13" machine this has everything I want - and what's wrong with me buying that? It has the performance I need, the reliability that I need and the portability that I need.
I hope that's not one of their gay horrible new laptops covered in super-reflective glass...

Unforgiveable if they are aiming for a media market. You need to see what's on the screen, not yourself.

kylef wrote:

Lies.

You can easily get a better spec'd laptop from the Dell site for much cheaper than that. Here's one for £300 less that is more powerful than a base spec'd MacBook. MacBook prices and specs can be found here.

Same CPU, better GPU (3650 instead of 9400M), double the RAM (4GB RAM instead of 2GB), double the hard drive (320GB instead of 160GB), better resolution display (1440x900 instead of 1280x800), better connectivity (has firewire, HDMI and VGA connectors - not some gay mini display port you need an adapter to use).

kylef wrote:

What most people want is exactly what Apple can't give. Bertster7 got it right - they make a much higher margin of profit per product than the likes of Microsoft. And the 'very niche market' - Apple are dominating the media market now..

Umm........what? The key to gaining market share is targetting the market. Apple have already started building a lot of stuff themselves (presumably for higher profits, but they say better quality)
They do make a much higher profit per unit, this has been in part due to their vast prices, in part due to the fact their costs have fallen due to outsourcing and cutting quality and in part due to the fact they provide the software and the hardware for their products.

Apple build very little stuff themselves. I don't know what you seem to think they make themselves, but all the parts I ever see for them have otehr comapnies names all over them and predominantly say made in China (Indonesia and the Phillipines are also common) on the box - as opposed to made in America, like they always used to be. Which parts do Apple make? It's not the RAM, hard drives, processors, chipsets, gpus, optical drives or displays certainly.

The only problems I see are that you paid too much for it and that your software choices are much more limited.

Apple would be a much needed alternative to Microsoft if they just did business smarter.  As it currently stands, they seem to willingly allow themselves to be a niche market that is overpriced and impractical for most users.

In America, the price differences are more.  In general, Europe pays a higher price for all PC parts, and as a result, Apple probably doesn't seem quite as expensive by comparison.  You also pay much more taxes on those parts and computer packages.

Stock values don't mean much when your competitor has a much much higher percentage of the market.

The reason I mentioned Gates's ownership is that it might have something to do with why Apple has never become a true competitor to Microsoft.  It's like the market is basically stacked.

Also, Jobs is still an idiot.  He might be charismatic, but he basically plays on the ignorance of his consumers.
To turn around Apple and hold it together (as we're seeing now with his absence) I wouldn't call him an 'idiot'. Would you still? The guy is a (no pun) genius for what he has done. He's not only targetted a small market with an arguably-worse product, but he's making great profit for the company and for himself.
I relented earlier about calling Jobs an idiot.  Again, he knows his market, but I don't particularly like his approach because Apple is high on profit, while I prefer more bang for my buck.  Stockholders might like high profit, but informed consumers don't.

If you don't open up manufacturing and software development to third parties, your consumers have less options.  That will always limit your market share.
Can't get the coding right for replying to each one of those quotes. Keep missing out something, was pissing me off trying to find it after five minutes of searching so if you don't mind I'll put everything underneath:

I can see why, and partly agree but I have one thing: serious peace of mind. Not once have I had to install drivers, go through any hassle like that. Quite literally absolutely everything is plug and play, it all just works. With regards to software - well everything I use is available on both platforms.

15% tax and yes Europe does seem to get it more expensive. What is it over there?

What if you're about to be both

I think Apple have already announced that as a 'not going to happen' thing - like I said earlier, they said that they are building the likes of unibody cases themselves.. I don't know what would be better to be perfectly honest.

Ok, yea I'll probably get banned because we have a bunch of windows fanboy faggots in here who are sheer bigots because they can't watch their porn in .wmv format but, in all respect, you know shit about what any of you are talking about. Even Kmarion isn't putting it all out there. What you don't get is that every Apple product is targeted towards a very specific group of people. Some examples:

Mac Mini - For people switching over from other systems, especially (specifically) desktops because they can connect the two computers, instantly tanfer over all the information, plug in their screens/keyboard/mice/etc. they they already own.

iMac - Good computer in general. Big screens for movies, games, editing, etc etc etc. Don't give me that fucking bullshit how Macs are shit for gaming. You are an arrogant fuck wanker. Sorry, but it's true. I can probably run any of the general games listed here better than 65% of the people here, depending on the game since mine is the older model with an older vid card. But nonetheless, BF2, 2142, CSS, etc etc is what I'm talking about. How you ask? The software that already comes with the software, called Bootcamp, you partition your HD to whatever amount you want (more than 5 gig) and you just load WinXP on it and you have a new computer (or using the other software that comes on it you can transfer your whole computer over like the mini)

Air - Yea, it's overpriced, but it's some eye candy targeted towards people who aren't too big into computers, want something mobile, small and light and will do email, internet, etc etc not big processing apps.

iPod - Self explanatory really...

The list goes on. I could get into all the specific types of iPods too. The Mac tower, admittedly is for high gaming or (mainly) movie editing. Pixar has a basement of many hundreds and hundreds of these things for their movies and movies like Pirates of the Caribbean etc.

More examples:

Accessories - Any accessory I have bought that even specifically says for PC only and won't work on Macs, I plug it into my mac and works instantly without spending 20 minutes installing drivers. So don't give me that versatility shit.

Third party apps - What the fuck are you talking about? Like I said you don't know shit. Especially since you can easily have both a PC and Mac on the same computer, if anything its more versatile. Don't give me that shit.

Interface - Sorry but you're dumb as fuck if you can't figure it out. Everything is, easily, 100x simpler to use and work and figure out than a PC.

Bigots/Fanboys - I'm not a Mac fanboy/bigot. I do have a preference for them for sure though. I work with both every, single day for many different reasons. Between work, and my music and games and personal reasons, mac, in general, is simply better. Jobs makes his stuff more expensive because they are better, more versatile, and to make a better profit.

Boy you really don't like getting pinned down.

I hate apple products (iPhone aside).. almost as much as people not making any kind of logical sense. Your insinuation that Apple is not being business smart when it's one of the few companies turning a (huge) profit in these economic times is a perfect illustration of how uniformed you really are. Open a newspaper or pay attention to the tech industry just a smidgen before you start rambling on with your nonsensical hate of Steve Jobs.

It's not little things.. it's nearly everything you wrote. You said Jobs was an idiot. When he returned in 1997 he turned them completely around. You've been claiming their failure in nearly every post. Whatever they are doing the result are certainly working in their favor. There is no speculation here. It's a fact.

Not once did you mention clones until imortal brought it up. You're telling Apple how to gain market share when they've been doing it for almost a decade now. Meanwhile MS is looking for ways to "reboot" itself. Which btw, I think Windows 7 is going a long way to right some wrongs.

@Bert, Apple doesn't outsource any of it's support do they? I heard that once. That could be a key to bringing the cost down.

No, I'm saying (nearly) every single post on these forums, (nearly) all against apple, have very very limited views and leave out a vast majority the things I've mentioned.

EDIT: I'm saying the opinions and 'knowledge' of apple products here is limited to "omg teh macs suck and always will and they are stupid and don't turn profits cause they suck".

I do not know how or why people can not look at their results objectively.

This is particularly annoying because it is so blatantly obvious.

Just edited the post while you were posting. And if you look through, for example, the last few pages, that's exactly what it is.

Considering there's physical proof that it's so; yes, it is obvious.

People don't know the history of the two companies/op. systems either. Most people don't know Jobs actually used to sell software/op syst. FOR gates. As in partners. Just stuff like that. Then Jobs realized if he broke away and went with his vision, and make some risky investments (such as apple and pixar/pixar for certain) that he could make billions. Which he did.

mac is what it is. Its great for grfx and music and video. It sucks if you want a choice of 5000 cd rom programs and games you can install.

Beings as my machine is now 95% work I don't care about games. The virus protection seems appealing. I was using one for a few weeks recently. I am more used to windows, but all in all, meh.

@xBlackPantherx , tbh honest I skimmed your rant. I applauded your passion.

That is all.
