The new US administration has welcomed Venezuela's vote to scrap term limits on the Presidency. I believe this is intelligent in that it is disarming. It is a bit hard to cry 'evil America' when public pronouncements of this nature are made by the administration. I believe it rolls back on years of false and hollow 'Democracy Promotion' hypocrisy too. It could of course simply be a ruse, an empty gesture while the CIA machinate in the background. But personally I think that it is important that the democratic will of the people of the nation of Venezuela be respected. The poll was declared free and fair by all international observers (of which there were many), just like the referendum poll not so long ago that Chavez lost. The election result should send a clear message to the right wing in Venezuela - that they need to reach out to the disaffected and impoverished people upon whose backs they made and make their fortunes. If they don't then goodness knows where Venezuela will end up (although so long as democracy persists it will be a Venzueula of their own making - for good or for bad).

Why is Venezuelan democracy even an issue for the US?
They only gripe when their plant loses.

Lay down? ... not being an ignorant prick like the previous administration is to lay down ? ... talking to people have the most amazing effects on relations in the long term, can open such fantastic options as trade, mutual recognition and positive image towards other countries ... you call it to lay down, I call it progress

Good article.

Here is another example of the Obama govt doing something good

The Australian wrote:

THE Obama administration will engage in serious "game changing" policy on nuclear weapon reduction, says former Labor foreign minister Gareth Evans, who spoke to US Vice-President Joe Biden at the weekend.....

White House officials have confirmed the administration was looking at opening talks with Russia over significant nuclear weapons reduction before the expiration this year of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty between the countries.
Tell me this isnt progress. A couple of months ago Russia was rattling the sabre, now there are talks of disarmament. Succeeding where Bush utterly failed.

That is the key.

Democracy is great...you get what you ask for. But you know the old saying about that...

I'll agree that there's progress when Russia says (and does) the same thing. If only one side does something in a multi-sided arrangement, it isn't necessarily overall progress.

Russia is adaptable and would go along with whatever cuts in their arsenal they can agree with the US, it's not like Russia has billions to spare either, all they demand is to be treated as an equal partner on a global scale ...

Well the invasion of Georgia was supposedly double standards to them, when the US complained they said look at Iraq, Afghanistan, et al.

It's quite a change in policy for them. Maybe now they have the pipeline secured they can go back to civil talks. It is progress though, thanks in part to the new US foreign policy standards.

Yeah - showing respect to and emphasising the importance of the democratic process is really bending over and taking one... what an abandonment of American principles....

Do you think some of those scary unconditional talks will take place? Imagine that, open dialogue without already having set terms of actions.

How in the world do you set conditions before agreeing to talk about them?

It's smart because 'ugo wants to get elected next time around and one of his major campaign points is probably "amerika h8s us, and we need me to sort them out" but if the US are like "good for you" then his chances of re-election just went down abit, imo.

Of course you could also see it as Obama destroying the USA and one day we'll all be speaking Spanish Venezelualian

I just had a revelation ...

We have "intelligent" policy in the US when our Euro friends agree with what we're doing.  Otherwise, we are stupid morons, yes?

One of. You do agree that a negative global image did affect a number of voters?
