Some of the colleges I want to go to are... well, quite a bit expensive. I'm currently a Junior in High School but I want to get a headstart on understanding all of this...how would I go about getting student loans? Are there any prerequisites which I'll need to fulfill? I'm pretty much going in blind here, so help me out.

PS. I doubt I'll have a problem getting into any of the schools I listed. From what I hear, having your pilot's license prior to entry (which I will) pretty much guarantees you'll get in. Plus, my uncle's an alum from Purdue, I know a teacher at Florida Tech, and a teacher at my flight school is also an alum who can recommend me.

Nigga get UMD and AU on your list pronto

During your college app process you fill out this thing called the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid... the free is unnecessary, idk who'd have the gall to charge for a fucking form). It basically qualifies you for scholarships at the schools you apply to, as well as what kinds of student loans you can get (I think...). Anyway, at some point I assume you go to the bank and get a student loan.

AU's definitely on my list, trust me...but I'm most likely going to go with aviation. If for some reason I decide not to though, AU's gonna be my choice. International Relations or Political Science ftw!

Hmm. Well, I was reading in the paper before that there's also a type of loan which I'd qualify for due to a parent's lost income? I know my dad did definitely (medical business is going dooooooooown the chute), so I'd imagine I'd qualify for that...right?

This whole process is fucking complicating.

If you want to cut costs you could go for 2 years at community college then transfer.

Naa they made those harder to qualify for, right before this shit hit the fan.. It was almost like they had some sort of ball that could tell the future..

You want to make crazy money.. Sell drugs, I kid.. Start a Pyramid scam and try to get close to 60 billion dollars.. You might get caught, but when  you do, you'll have House arrest in your 6 million dollar penthouse..

International Relations is Political Science

When you fill out your apps, each school will have Student Aid, scholarships and Grants you can apply for.  Fill each and every one you qualify for meticulously.  I'm serious when I mean every one too, because you will see ridiculous sounding grants that you can apply for.  People will throw you money for such mundane things as being Jewish, being the first in your family to go to college, etc.

Once you are get in, there are more scholarships and grants offered all the time.  Make sure to visit the school's financial aid office to get all the info.  And I would recommend not going to a local bank to get a student loan, because there are many financial institutions specifically geared toward student loans that will give you a better rate.

Yeah, but he'd not be able to do that for like 8 years, and then the economy will probably be at least starting to recover.

Poseidon, that's not very expensive. If you want to complain, think about what it would've cost me had I gone to Cambridge--close to 60 grand. Now, since I cannot afford that, I'm going local. If you want cash, look for the schools' own scholarships and loans: most schools have a scholarship-matching policy as well. Moreover, and I'm not sure if this is the case in the US, you can sue your parents if they have money and don't give it to you. So find a lawyer friend!

Only reason to go to a 4 year institution as a Freshman is if you want to live on campus to drink with and fuck all the other freshmen.

My family, immigrants from the Dominican Republic, couldn't afford for me to go to college, so I went to Community College for 3 years while working full time.  At the end of 3 years I transferred to a real college as a Junior and finished taking classes there (in the state of California they have a program that allows you to take 'core classes' and have them transfer to a 4-year institution).

It cut my college costs in half, basically, and while I was at community college I was using the same textbook and often was taught by the same professors (i.e. my English 202 professor taught English at USC), in a class of 25-30 instead of 400-500.

Good luck.

EDIT: When I was at the job fair on campus companies were more interested in me than others in my class.  I almost worked for IBM right out of college, but decided not to take the job (would had required alot of travel).  I was making 45,000/year as an engineer at a local medical manufacture when I was still a Junior in college.  Granted I didn't get to always work 40 hours/week, but the company was flexible with my hours so I fit as much as I could while taking 12-16 units a quarter.
