How beginner?

Chris Orwig has some video out there on Lynda.com (and other places) that are pretty helpful for the novice. Also, bookmark http://strobist.blogspot.com/

The biggest thing is shoot shoot shoot.
merci.

I've understood the concept/relations between ISO, Aperture and shutter speeds now, I just need to go practice and learn what settings work best for different scenarios. I also need to read up a bit on the basic use of the flash as well.

I've been drowned in exams lately, but my last one is on Saturday and after that I'll have 9 days to play golf and shoot pictures while I wait for the others to finish up.

Strobist is the place to go for learning flash. Once you get the hang of flash basics, youll have a lot of fun with it

Related: Just got my second flash... Yongnuo 560 new revision; quite impressed, $85 for all the power of a 430EX II. It has all the features of the 430 plus a few (-7 degree tilt, 1/128 power, optical slave, beep indicator). Only thing it lacks is TTL, but you dont need that for a slave

bad wording and grammar brought to you by brain deadness

The Associated Press has settled its copyright infringement claim against artist Shepard Fairey on amicable terms, the wire service announced today. The settlement ends a nearly two-year court battle over Fairey's unauthorized use of an AP photo to create the iconic Obama Hope poster. http://www.pdnonline.com/pdn/news/Shepa … 1466.shtml

Right, went out to take some pictures today. Sadly the sun decided to hide itself quickly so didn't get a lot of stuff done. Anyway, thought I'd post some bad pictures in here for the sake of tips - if that's alright, anyway.

I'll start off with this one, which was rather disappointing, because the actual scene was nice. There was such a nice contrast between the worn pier and boats and the clear blue sky, and ditto the contrast between the red boats and green houses. It just doesn't get shown in the photo. The colours were also a lot more vivid than how they appear in the photo, the sky a lot bluer. It's just kind of, ehh, boring I guess.

The idea was to get a lot of it in focus, so I chose a relatively low aperture and focused on the green in the water. Though I guess i could've focused on the boats instead. 1/80 sec at f/14, ISO 100.

Any tips would be awesome, but basically what I wanted from this picture is for it to be more.. exciting, if you will.

what i would have used for a day like this is a circular polarizer. ISO looks good, that f/stop is kind of tight (i'll go f/11 when i'm doing HDR).

Hrm, what exactly would that do? I've seen those that add a coloured (e.g. blue) tint to the photo, but I don't think that's what you're talking about?

Deepens the colour blue. Makes blue skies look more vivid.

a polarizer will take away maybe two stops of light (like going from 2.8 - 5.6) allowing you to be open wider, longer. but what it does is cut glare and even out tones. "the blue tint" is a more natural sky.

Camera     Canon EOS 7D

Fuck, now I want a circular polarizer. At least they're not too expensive.

look at the end of your lens (the size you needs right there).

i never use it from about an hour and a half before sundown, to about an hour and a half after sunrise.

Yeah, 'tis a 58. Would I notice a big difference between this and this?

Obviously I'd prefer the cheap one, but if it's just a piece of crap, then...

i've heard of Hoya (my wife has one) and will tell you it's slimmer. when a polarizer is too tall, it will vignette your picture. some people like it, others don't.

make sure to keep the case it comes in, it's not something you'll want on, all the time.

I've been sitting here thinking about polarizers and reading about how they're used in photography (the physics behind it) for 10mins or so. Interesting stuff.

it's good stuff, if they're used right - never during the 'Golden hours'.
get a thin polarizer if you have a wide angle to avoid vignette, otherwise probably not necessary

hmm i don't use a polarizer too much. bad kim lol

Seeing as a) I don't have a wide-angle, b) I'm a complete newbie and c) I'm a poor student, I've just ordered the cheapest polarizer. Looking forward to trying it out when it gets here.

you'll be glad. remember, polarizer's are best used when the sun's up - doesn't matter if there are some clouds - but the best light of day (sunrise/sunset) is best unfiltered. cheers!

Yeah, I can imagine. Photos taken during sunset/sunrise are hard to beat!

Jens, don't be shooting around f/14 if you don't have to! First up, your lens has a sweet spot (typically two stops down from max aperture) where by the image will be sharpest.. after that you may find that the image gets softer. Secondly, since it's a river scene, I'd have opened up the aperture to give a faster shutter speed, to ensure that there was no blur from movement.

When using any filter, remember that you get what you pay for. My 77mm Hoya slim circular polarizer cost me maybe $150-200, but I'm willing to pay that price because it's going in front of a very expensive lens. If I used any old filter, it would erode any image sharpness benefit I get from expensive glass!
