I'm just wondering if anyone here has upgraded. Is it worth it ? 10usd more a month sounds reasonable. Do I have to buy a new cable modem  ?

Fucking Australia. I'm on 1.5mb with a 12gb cap per month.

And thats fairly fast. I think the average is like 512kb-1mb.

Fiber allows ridiculously fast speeds AFAIK. But I don't think anyone offers more than 1000mb/s.

My mate gets 3 mb/s download minimum and up to 10mb on his Virgin Fiberwire.

He's on a 50MB package.

exactly.

By this summer my ISP should support DOCSIS 3.0 with 100mbps lines in Zürich (which is where I live most of the time). Gonna be awesome

Friend of mine is on Virgin 20meg, it's fucking useless, barely manages to get 1meg equivelant DL speeds and his ping jumps around from 90-400 in L4D... They blame it on the area he's in, I blame them for not checking the local infrastructure before offering a 20meg service they cant supply.

Eurgh, 100Mbps products on sparsely bundled DOCSIS 3.0 spectra suck if other people on the segment are coming even close to using their connection fully. A typical rollout with 100Mbps products on DOCSIS 3.0 is something like 300-400Mbps worth of downstream spectrum for hundreds, and often even thousands of customers. D:!

Doesn't matter how fast the backhaul from the CATV head-end to the distribution infrastructure is when just a handful of people can deteriorate the service significantly on the local segment.

They've got fiber in the ground and just use the TV cabling for getting the signal into each home. You've got maybe 30 households on a copper cabling segment, most of which will probs have DSL anyhow. I have faith in them

You're very lucky if you've got 30 hookups per segment. Most cable providers find it difficult to turn a profit with anything less than 4-500. I've seen case studies with as many as 8,000 customers on a single DOCSIS 2.0 segment.

Cablecom (my ISP) would love to drop the whole TVcable method but can't because of fun government regulation. Swisscom (i.e. what used to be the state telephone company) has a monopoly on all data services that aren't over TV cables.

So cablecom basically now is an ISP with fiber internet where the local hookup to the individual homes is done over cable

I assume 20Mb is for their premium broadband service. WOW cable premium service download speed is 15 Mbps; AT&T increase their "premium" download speed as well. Insight's graph is out of date or inaccurate.
