dont much remember the kill radius for a 155mm round, but, the majority of IED's that my platoon found (hundreds..not an exaggeration) were 155 and when ever he had to call EOD to blow it we had to stand back a mandatory 100m.  Also when we called in fire missions, we had to make sure that there were no civilians/livestock/items of infrastructure/homes within 100m of the splash zone.  Kinda stupid I thought, whats the point in blowing up 100m patch of dirt with 12 paladins blazing 6 miles away landing 48 rounds on target, but,  there were a few times when convoys were being ambushed and civilian casualties were not a deciding factor.  What can I say, I was in a mechanized infantry platoon attached to a FA unit....those cannon cockers love their jobs, but ill lie if I said I didnt jump 5 feet when a paladin decided to fire away right behind me without me knowing it.

Brings back memories.  First time I heard the Paladins fire was in the middle of the night for an Illum mission (They must have put up 10-15 rounds and they lit up the sky like Day!).  Scared the shit out of me before I figured out what it was.  It's plenty loud on the firing end...hope I never am on the receiving end!

too used to the loud noises inside the wire that werent outgoing....remind me everytime in the fob you hear a boom you tend to cock your head at an angle trying to decide whether its incoming or outgoing look around for a bunker or sand bag pit and realize if you already heard it you be dead by now and continue mission to the difac

It was a little different for us.  We didn't have much outgoing, so any 'booms' were usually incoming.  Mostly 60mm, sometimes 80mm.  The Paladins were a lot louder than any 60mm I had ever heard...started sleeping through those.

the whole point of out 90% is retarded I think like i said.  Usually you hear outgoing when an ied went off and we just wanna rattle up the local insurgents around the IED blast area, or when we took in mortar or rocket attacks but thats pretty pointless too.  Once you zeroed in on the source of the attack, there long gone.  first 6 months i was in taji and theres a lot of farms and open space, last 6 months though i was in baghdad and I cant imagine using arty down there,  rarely used mortars.

19 pages so far...sheesh.

Look, the US is playing patty-cake with insurgents. Force the US into a corner like people are suggesting with the combined "might" of Europe, Russia and China (even if that amount of international cooperation against the US were possible), and we'd pull the stops out from under our conventional capabilities. Unconventional, if it came down to it...even if it meant sacrificing American lives in the process. I don't care if you have a trillion men with AK's and H&K's. They're going to all be useless if tracked from space and killed by a few push-button switches.

How accurate are tomahawk missles btw? This is a pure question because I don't know (so ppl don't take it wrong)

Can anyone comment, however, on the choppers gunning down a whole group of women because they *looked* suspicious?
can you please point out the story in which a chopper ( I am assuming an American apache) gunned down a whole group of women??.....I ttry to keep up on current events but that one seems to have gotten by me.. thx
I've heard about the soldiers going nuts when their mate got killed and just randomly gunning down loads of innocent Iraqi civilians:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle … 827424.stm

You probably won't see that on the American news though, I can't seem to find it anyway:

http://news.google.co.uk/nwshp?hl=en&am … 20killings

It's no wonder the story gets a bit bent out of shape when a whole country relies on word of mouth or overseas news services to get the truth.
on the contrary...our libral media ( who hates Bush about as much as you do) eats up stories like this.

Besides, America airs its dirty laundry more than any other nation does I suspect.

anyway.......thx for the links

DO NOT TRUST ALJAZEERA AT ALL.  THEY REPORT THAT THE IRAQ INSURGENCY HAS KILLED 10's of  THOUSANDS, THAT OUR BRADLEYS AND TANKS HAVE FORCE FIELDS SURROUNDING THEM.  ALJAZEERA IS DEAD WRONG WHEN IT COMES TO OBJECTIVITY

Marconius, your statement about Al Jazeera is perfect.........It shows that you are not seeking truth in anything, but instead seek sources to reenforce your jaded opinion of your very country.

In other words..........we won't any longer try and confuse you with the facts......your mind is made up

Yes, yes, just the reaction I expected.  I Netflixed Control Room and watched it the other night...I read about it a few months ago in Newsweek and decided that I'd like to learn about the other side of the story, something you seem to have a problem with, lowing.

Seeking truth means going to all sources.  "Control Room" is a documentary on Al Jazeera during the invasion of the Iraq war, and gives a really nice viewpoint on how much they've been trashed over the years.  It was nice seeing it from their perspective rather than from the American perspective for once.

You don't read brilliantly, do you?

Seeking truth means going to all sources.
Al-jazeera is ONE source.

During " shock and Awe " Our bombing was so acurate, you could see Iraqi  drivers waiting at red lights.

They knew we werent targeting them. They knew they were safe.

Seems like you are the only one who cant figure it out.

Well, Gunslinger hit right on the button there Marconius.........you said it was the only source you were going to trust for news about the Middle East.....now that you have been called on it.........you are trying to change your view and say you are looking in all directions for source material........So do you want to back pedal and rephrase your comment or are you going to stick with your 2 conflicting statements??? If I were you I would try back pedaling

Sorry for the confusion, but I'll stick to my statements if you allow me to explain myself.  So I'm not allowed to parse through US, British, and Arabic news in an attempt to find the truth?  I'll revise my statement to be: "When it comes down to trusting the US media over Al Jazeera for what's happening in the Middle East, I'm going to lean towards Al Jazeera as US media has just lost all credibility with me."

"Control Room" goes over the US backlash against Al Jazeera just because Al Jazeera was trying to represent both sides of the conflict.  They translate and air the broadcasts from Bush, Rumsfeld, and the US, plus gave airtime to those against the US occupation of Iraq.  Al Jazeera is also extremely stringent on who they interview, meaning it has to come from a well-supported official from either line of thought, and not just some randomly chosen person with an agenda to push.

It goes over how the US media at CentCom kept trying to control what the media (Read: ALL media outlets, not just Al Jazeera) was going to report, plus the "accidents" the US military had when it took out three reporting teams from Al Jazeera and other Arabic news sources in three separate events...all on the same day.

Im not saying you should ignore aljazeera, in fact I goto their english web page sometimes just to see how the arab world is gonna view things.  But when they said that 4000 american troops died along with hundreds of tanks and aircraft and that we dropped napalm on civilians in fallujah, right after operation phantom fury of which my task force was the spearhead and I was apart of, I should very well have been dead.
