One of the useful things about reading anything is expanding your vocabulary. How the fuck are you going to learn new words if you don't read them then look them up? The fact that some people here might have a more extensive vocabulary should be seen as a good thing, because it might teach you idiots something new. I seriously doubt there are too many members who have a thesaurus open when they are typing. To be honest I am more concerned with the people who can't type out complete sentences and/or correctly spell everyday words, even if it is just on an internet forum.
especially in D&ST. I can't respect your argument or even take you seriously when your grammar is crude at best.
Well I just went around using all the free demo's because I can't afford "classes". Meh, I'm not really bothered either way, I don't make an effort to use words I ordinarily wouldn't, and I won't make a habit to tone down the words I do use for people that aren't good at English.dayarath wrote:
not my job to teach people that. If you want to further your language skills (i.e. you're already at the point where you can debate at a reasonable level, but want to improve) you will most likely be taking classes. It's alot more effective than looking at what other people write on this forum here. And there's a chance you might actually pick up bad habits instead of good ones; trying to express yourself with the wrong words.jord wrote:
Maybe, but seeing the language used in a debate gives you more of an idea about the tone, context and what it means. I guess it's for people who want to further their language skills. Sure beats a picture of a Cow and then the word "Karova".
Yes I tried learning Russian like a year ago, loooooooooool.
I'll be taking russian / arabic courses in the summer.
I'm not really surprised at how this thread turned out. Not one bit.

Ontopic, I use big words some times, although I don't do it to appear smart, or to show off, I do it so I'm constantly using my expansive vocabulary. If I find the meaning of a new word (Most recently, "quintessential" and "vociferous") I try and incorporate it into my speech, therefore cementing the use and meaning in my head.
Edit: Not a shame edit. My mistook was spotted by surgeons.
But if you never look past spelling, grammar and words to ideas your missing the big picture. Spelling and to a lesser extent grammar is just blind memorization. There is nothing intelligent about it. Obviously wen u use wurdz n shit u kno iz not in a dickshunary, that's different. But when I see people who can do nothing more then pop into a conversation to correct some minor mistake that has nothing to do with the idea, I can't help but think how worthless the person is for having nothing more to add but being so desperate to show off their superiority.
It seems almost like the recent high school graduate who just took his first junior college psyc. class analyzing a peers abandonment issues. It just screams "LOOK! I MEMORIZED A FACT SOMEWHERE!"
Imma go with KEN on this one. You can usually tell when somebody is sprouting a "I learned this in class today" word, or when someone naturally writes in an eloquent fashion due to a mastery of the language. We're not even talking about superfluous words that are added to add imagery here, but just about so-called "big words", ones that every now and then the odd fellow comes along and doesn't know what it means. Vocabulary spices up your language: it would be boring to have just one word for everything, especially in adjectives.
If I write:
On the morrow I shall be most discomfited if my ideal means of vehicular transportation is in some manner hindered or mired. Moreover, I shall thus finally have adequate rationale to become irate.
As opposed to:
Tomorrow I’ll be pissed if my ride doesn’t show up. But I’ll have a good reason to be pissed.
What's the real difference? Apart from using twice as many letters and twice as much time?
Maybe I'm just ESL, but I think it's something to do with target audience. I'm not here to impress online anonymous people. Hence, I think that if you want to impress people on BF2s, it's your problem, not anyone else's.

What's with this forum's phobia of people using 'fancy' or 'shiny' or 'big' words? What does it say about us as a society where people are demeaned for using high level vocabulary? Too often I see certain members of this forum attacked for nothing other than using the vocabulary of a well-educated adult.
Tl;dr (Sad thing is, those three sentences are too long for some people): Stop getting pissed off because somebody made you pull up dictionary.com
it's not a phobia of "shiny" words, but it makes you sound like a complete twat when your entire sentence is comprised of them. by no means am i a "stupid little cunt" and i passed 7th grade vocab with flying colors but with certain members it gets to the point where it sounds like they're trying to impress the teacher. i would love to scan pretty report cards and SAT scores to prove my intelligence, but i don't think it has to go that far.
don't misunderestimate (see what i did there?) how intelligent people are because they don't see the point in writing a page of text when a sentence will do.
