Yes!

One tax provision would provide a $500 tax cut for most workers and $1,000 for couples, at a cost of about $140 billion to $150 billion over two years. The individual tax cuts may be awarded through withholding less from worker paychecks, effectively making them about $10 to $20 larger each week.
Sweet fucking hell. I might actually be ok with the way I cast my vote.

Obama wrote:

This crisis did not happen solely by some accident of history or normal turn of the business cycle. And we won't get out of it by simply waiting for a better day to come or relying on the worn-out dogmas of the past.

We arrived at this point due to an era of profound irresponsibility that stretched from corporate board rooms to the halls of power in Washington, D.C.

For years, too many Wall Street executives made imprudent and dangerous decisions, seeking profits with too little regard for risk, too little regulatory scrutiny, and too little accountability. Banks made loans without concern for whether borrowers could repay them, and some borrowers took advantage of cheap credit to take on debt they couldn't afford.
That part of his speech I agree with, in general - if not exactly in the implied details and omitted specifics.

I also like his proposed $3000 tax credit to small business, and middle class tax cut.

I still don't trust Obama in the slightest, but his speeches are sounding better.

Really not liking how he's floating the test balloon on "The Mother of All Bailouts" though.

So......do you reckon in this current climate, that these tax cuts will work. I mean, sure, people will have a little more spending money. But like I said, in this climate, people aren't even keen on spending anymore, they're just going to save it for the days where they might be out of a job. I dunno, tax cuts seem like something that won't work in this climate.

Like how they cut VAT from 17.5 to 15%, yeah like that's going to work, people will start buying more shit because it's a few quid cheaper. gg.

The money you "save" on taxes will just be eaten up by inflation of goods.

^^ Yes if they start printing more money (which they probably will). Otherwise we've been experiencing a form of deflation. The demand for manufactured goods has been down. Mostly due to the fact people can't afford luxuries.

Uh... tax cuts are nice and all, but spending cuts are a LOT better.

Why the fuck can't either party figure this out?

LOL...  Well, if the Democrats and Republicans don't want to be fiscally conservative, somebody has to.  I guess the Libertarians are the only ones that fit that description now.

Werd. Whilst it's nice to have some extra cash, I don't believe they help out the economy in the slightest.

This is true. I've disowned them both. Sucks because Fl has closed primaries.

It needs to be combined with incentives to encourage domestic spending. Throw in some tariffs .. er... something.

Ugh... I won't be bought off for an extra $20 a week.  His speech was fear mongering in the beginning followed by a puff government is the savior of all.   Big government is not the answer.   Transparent bipartisan government?  Yea, tell that to Pelosi.   Early report have him 'secret talks with Hamas'.

He's smoke and mirrors.

The affordable housing dems got us into this mess.  Bush for some reason decided to merely toss money at it the banks and cars.  And It didn't fix shit.  However,  now the breakers of the banks and whiners of equality, in turn lock out the new minority and claim to have a (more of the same) solution to fix it?  Smoke and mirrors...

Maybe open dialogue is a good thing every once in a while.

However, this could be one of those "unconditional talks" that McCain was so against with Russia and the like.

Well, my theory is that, if you spend more than you have for long enough, people stop investing in your country, and your currency tanks.

For the most part, we've already seen this happen some.

Instead of stimulus spending, we should be cutting out government pork and paying down the national debt.

In North Carolina, both parties have open primaries.  As an independent, I can vote in either one, but of course, not both.

That's how spread out he is... He can't make every happy all the time...   Which reiterates the point of this man being self serving.

I still think it's a bad idea,  I'd think it a bad idea if Bush pulled it too.   What would he say to them?  Stop launching terrorist attack and then we can talk more?  Hamas knows what they need do.  The ball is in their court.

At the moment they are pissed about a lot of things, one of which is the blockade they are facing. The blockade has it's uses, keeping rockets and arms out of the country. But it has stopped needed medical supplies coming in. And the UN has pulled some aid out with the death of a driver now also.

If the US were to provide some incentive to stop rocket attacks it might make it more worth doing.

Then the US can always use the threat of pulling aid out if the rockets continue.
