Yeah, right now I think I have all my talent points in Affliction.  I like hitting mobs with a bunch of DoT spells and then just walking away.
Pretty good survivability and mana consumption too, all-in-all. Downtime and dying are two things you do not want when trying to grind fast or level in a zoom-zoom manner

Nono, you got me wrong. We brought those figures everywhere, mostly school to show off how incredible they were. Then after school we met with friends to endure the most challenging adventures our minds could make up.

The drift nowadays is to do things with your friends, but not directly.Somehow.

But there are of course good things coming along, like the possibilty to easily make friends all over the world, or stay in contact with them when leaving the country (as in my case).

Welcome to 'The Suck' TMo, nice to hear you started with a Warlock also, i've been playing my Lock since i bought the game and logged in for the first time. It's always nice to read how some peoples perceptions of WoW can drastically change, i was the same before i started playing and now i think it's one of the greatest game's available to currently play. So much diversity, so much to take it and enjoy. If you enjoy it now, i can't even begin to explain how much you will enjoy it further.

I read you are playing Affliction, it has its merits as Uzique (<3) pointed out, but don't be afraid to play around and experiment. There are some amazing resources available for any class on WoW, also if you have any questions about Warlock you are welcome to PM me, i'm always happy to help

Also, playing a Warlock means you get the coolest mounts in the game

God damn.  Started herbalism today.  After about two hours, I'm level 50.  Also, while searching for herbs, I was able to level my skinning skill from 20 to about 140.

And then because of that, I was able to create a bunch of auctions and make a ton of gold.  Looks like I WILL be able to afford that mount after all.

It's not a MMORPG, it's a CORPG. There's nothing 'MMO' about it, in that it's not massive and the only 'online' parts for the most-part are the Diablo-style avatar chatrooms aka cities and meeting zones. The world is completely instanced and is a little bubble for you and the other 4-6 people that are with you, plus the human element is often removed because of the bots or hero NPC's or whatever they're called nowadays. I played the game for a long while when it was first released but it is fundamentally different in many ways.

I was actually quite suprised to hear they dropped the pre-Q for Dreadsteeds, tho i can understand why, perhaps they should have adjusted the quest line slightly so it doesnt require you to go Scholo and Dire Maul, after all you do summon the mount as a demon, so i feel the lore should have been kept. I did find it very rewarding to finally get my Dreadsteed from doing the quest line.

It has no monthly fees, but no less than three expansion packs, and the closest you get to a persistent world are the various tiny PVP arenas. The quests (for the most part) are redundant slipper fetchers, you have to unlock skills (unless you throw ANET another few bucks) and much of it has degenerated into player-based elitism and title braggartry. I'd say wait for Diablo 3 or Guild Wars 2.

Herbalism is definately a profitable gathering profession, the mats always sell due to flasks and pots so you are in to make a very nice amount of gold from that. Skinning on the other hand, imo, hasn't turned out to be such a great gathering profession to have. Yes it gives you 'Master of Anatomy' (improves critical strike rating and is soon recieve a buff) but the only real profitable skin is 'Arctic Fur' and that doesnt have a said drop raid. Unlike 'Cobra Scales' in TBC.

I'd seriousley recommend you to take Alchemy to go with that Herbalism, also go elixir master, flasks are always needed and its nice when you can proc extra flasks. For example, i took mats for 10 spell dmg flasks to a friend and i ended up with 23 flasks from the mats i had. And these flasks sell for around 80g, tho i don't sell them, i use them and give them to raid members, it's stll easy enough to see the profit involved in the profession.

I also have tailoring, which as yet, is worthless except for 2/3 items at best. And even the value of those items is far outweighed by the amount of gold i've invested into the prof. And it's very annoying considering tailoring was pretty much a must for TBC warlocks.

To be honest Baggs, I'm glad to see Tailoring taking a back-seat for clothies in WotLK... in TBC it was matter of make your specialist sets and then sit back and /autocast until Tier5 rolled in. The tailoring items in The Burning Crusade were incredibly good compared to the time and effort taken to make them (for instance, my mage with the help of a tailoring friend had the full Spellcloth set in < 5 days)- and with proper enchants/gems it didn't need replacing by any raid gear up until a ridiculous item-level.

I do see your point, shadowbolt spamming was complete face roll and i'm happy to be able to use 3/4 varied specs to achieve the dps expected of a Warlock now. But considering i can take a gathering skill such as herbing to complement alchemy and mining to complement jewelcrafting i find myself a bit short changed for the effort i ploughed in to get my tailoring to 444 as it is now. There is one single benefit to having tailoring and thats 'Lightweave Embroidery', yes its quite nice but i'd rather have the extra buffs when using flasks from alchemy, or being able to equip those really nice gems via jewlecrating.

I guess my main piss off is that i don't get benefits from tailoring which i expect, and even tho the BoP leg enchants i can do for myself are nice and cheap, but you can still get the BoE patterns so anyone can have the same benefits as a tailor without the expense the tailor invested in his profession.

And yeah, the carpet is nice, but fucking hell you look like an prick stood on it would much rather be sat down, and why the piss can't i carry my mate with me!

I guess you could call MMO characters the new action figures, and why not? They can do 100 and more things than a stiff-joined Power Ranger or Ninja Turtle.

*You'd be surprised how many WoW lan parties there are. There's even a couple LAN room/computer maintenance businesses around the corner that I can walk into at about any time during hours (and sometimes after) and see 80% of the computers going with people playing WoW, L4D or, at one of the places, tabletop WH40K.
*The staying in contact bit is useful for people just moving out of a county as well as a country. Time used to be, you pretty much had to say your goodbyes and start all over with a new set of friends when you skipped over such a short range as a couple of towns. Kids should be encouraged to make more, sure, but the keep in touch factor is sweet. My earliest taste was with sporadic phone calls and games of Doom, Descent, Warcraft and Heretic. Now I'm still buddies (from casual to regular) with people all over the US and Canada that I've played Diablo, Quake, Jedi Knight and various MUDs with through IM, and would probably have an MMO base if I would've bothered with such titles as EQ or DAoC.

You shoulda seen the awesomeness of the in-game economy the week following WotLK launch. As you can imagine, the uncertainty of prices and the sheer 'WTF is this worth?' factor of all the new items and commodities coming into circulation meant that a lot of people made an overnight fortune. I was selling 20/stacks of ore from the new zones for 150g+ easily with no trouble at all selling mass amounts at that price to the eager upcoming Blacksmiths and Engineers. Absolutely insane. When a 70-75 quest rewards 5gold a time for your troubles, but 20 pieces of ore from the zone gives you almost 200g... time to rearrange your priorities . I mined and picked herbs for hours that first week... shame I got tired and found nothing exciting about the new content, because I would be a richman by now!

Thats rather respectable for lower levels, if you can carry that method of selliing on all the way to 80, you will have plenty of gold. There are only a few money sinks along the way which is both flying skills and then the flying license for Northrend. But i doubt you'll have much money problems when it comes to that stage, tho suprisingly, there are still lvl 80 players we have to summon up to Naxxramas.

All the other money sinks are purely optional, i.e. mounts and items.

What level are you now on the Warlock?

I'm only level 18.  I've gone back to my starting point to finish up a couple low-level quests before I continue on to the next area.  I have a couple quests I've accepted that I'm not even going to attempt yet because I'll get annihilated.  So for the next couple levels, I'm just going to grind it out and pick herbs/skin my kills.  I figure I can probably hit near 1000g before I hit level 19.

Naise! Sounds like you are doing the right thing with your levelling but don't let it stop you from exploring and moving into different areas! It's definately more efficient to clear zones, i.e. enter your new area, pick up all quests and just plough thru them but i'm sure you've already figured that one out

Can i ask, what add-ons are you using?

Right now I'm only using QuestHelper and Auctioneer.  Auctioneer is awesome and helps me make a ton of money.  QuestHelper just makes everything that much easier.

And yeah, I tend to do a lot of exploring...as in, I'll completely explore an area before I move on to the next one.  I find it's a lot more fun to do it that way and find a bunch of random stuff in the game rather than just level as quickly as possible.  PLUS, this way I get my professions up much more quickly.  Even though I'm only level 18, my skinning is up near 150 and my herbalism is right around 120.
