He's the hero of those that envision an elite ruling the world with a spreadsheet. Things like freedom and free will get in the way of the calculations.

When reading Friedman you have to place yourself in the position of knowing that you are the smartest person on the planet, that you have all the answers, and that if they would just give you the power you could fix everything. That's his viewpoint.

Friedman has some perfectly reasonable ideas, they're more than the average democracy could likely deliver but that doesn't mean they're bad ideas.
they're not talking about milton friedman.

an example of a writer that uses cultural/historical materialism (i.e. strange anecdotes and apercus from the marginalia of culture): foucault. foucault is the master of that method. it started with frankfurt school thinkers like benjamin, as a historical methdology, i mean. what foucault can do with the small unnoticed facts of everyday life is just incredible.

None of which means his ideas are bad.

In the current political climate could, anywhere in the West, something like the moon landing program be created from scratch? The Manhattan project? The Hoover Dam?
Not much more than lip-service was paid to Reagan's star wars plan, now its next to impossible to put up or tear down a simple power station.

The only people with a long term plan and the capability to push through large projects or make structural changes are the Chinese.

Walked passed the local charity shop, and saw they were selling the 20 penguin great ideas books in the first series in near-perfect condition for £20.. Had to.

As far as book design goes, the series is way up there - absolute quality. Covers can be seen here: http://www.penguin.co.uk/static/cs/uk/0 … dex_1.html

Now to find time to read them all.

I once came across a series of images of this girl in different poses/positions with various Kurt Vonnegut books in front of her girly parts.. Shit was weird.

Has she ever written anything that would reveal her understanding of the philosophy she reads? I'm just curious if she's actually rather smart and just like to take massive cock in the ass on camera, or if she's a an idiot to the core.

I hate this deliberate, yet stupidly wrong use of German umlauts.

Apparently, she took her porn name from the German KMFDM keyboarder and she also likes Kraftwerk.
Idiotic use of those diacritics doesn't make you look more germanophil, it makes you look utterly stupid to everyone who actually knows that language and knows how to pronounce it.

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy - Trilogy of five.

Better than the film, but after the first one I can see why they didn't continue with the sequel, gets a bit less accessible/suitable for the the masses.
Typical Douglas humour all the way through. 7/10

Anyone familiar with Jonathon Franzen? I have been reading reviews for his book Freedom which is being held up by a lot to be masterpiece. The reviews are pretty split though. Some people think it is a masterpiece of American fiction. Others think it is a pretentious meh. One review that really caught my attention was the one that took down the books supposed claim to discuss and think about freedom on a universal level that all Americans can understand and relate to. The reviewer laid out the case that there isn't any universality in the book and its characters and situations are only relateable to upper middle class suburban people. Thoughts?

I read Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse 5 a few months back. It's his most famous and best selling book. Everyone said it was as masterpiece so I had high expectations. After I finished it I filed it as: Good book. Not a fan of the author's writing style. He came off as pretty bitter. The further away I get from the book the less I like it.

So what is on your reading list coming up?

Mine: Bel-Ami is my definite next novel. I still have to finish Osman's dream. To finish off my break I will tackle At Swim-Two birds.

After that maybe Cloud Atlas and maybe Freedom. Freedom is looking less and less appealing the more I look past the hype. I haven't done my research on Cloud Atlas but the hype train is chu-chuing around it.

I'm reading this at the moment:

The fictional version of the protagonist from the book-world (from one of the previous real-real-world books) is playing the main role, while the real-world protagonist is missing.

Meta-meta-literature.

i thought you were being sarcastic, but that's interesting. i don't know how they're going to make 6 season out of a single novel, whereas they made a single season out of each of the first two ASOIAF books.
