i'm the sort of guy that would prefer to not even 'dirty' the paper-edges of my books with hand-grease / sweat / dirt.

I don't think that's too unusual among readers. Who likes dealing with books that fall apart, orange-juice-warped pages or crusty stuff on of an unidentifiable nature?

I don't mind creases in the spines of paperback books, though. CBA to hold them only ninety degrees open, and a crease or two reminds me that I've read something.

I'm the same way.

My wife, on the other hand...let's just say I'd rather read the book first.

haha...my hard cover books stay nice...but if I read a paperback, OH LORD...it's finished. lol  I guess it just feels so disposable to me that I don't even think twice about folding it back and what not.

I like hardbacks, the paper is usually better quality which is nicer and enriches the experience.

exact same with my girlfriend... you'd think she wrestles with the books, instead of reads them.

some paperbacks have nice quality paper, dilbert... depends on the publisher. faber's poetry has amazing paper and is always soft-jacketed.

Ordering this.. Haven't actually read the entire thing before, only excerpts and texts on the book. Which is kind of sad.

Do any of you recognize it/know about it? It's hard to gauge how famous stuff like this is abroad. I assume Uzique has.

i've been rereading russell's 'history' (yes, again) and i'm astounded, after the early history, how anyone can be a convicted christian. tracing the wider history of world religion really just makes any singular faith seem totally misguided. thank goodness that we have such intelligent agnostics/atheists as russell, who spoke with more critical common sense than any bullshit dawkins/hitchens polemic.

so so funny

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/book … ences.html

If Dan Brown’s new novel The Lost Symbol is anything like his previous works, it will not go down well with the critics. Famously, comedian Stewart Lee mocked him for using the sentence “The famous man looked at the red cup” in his bestselling The Da Vinci Code.

In fact, Lee was making that up – the sentence never appears in the book. So are the critics unfair on Brown?

They’re certainly harsh. Edinburgh professor of linguistics Geoffrey Pullum says “Brown's writing is not just bad; it is staggeringly, clumsily, thoughtlessly, almost ingeniously bad.” He picks out some excerpts for special criticism. The female lead in Angels and Demons learns of the death of her scientist father: “Genius, she thought. My father . . . Dad. Dead.” A member of the Vatican Guard in the same book becomes annoyed by something, and we learn that "his eyes went white, like a shark about to attack."

I've read the first chapter through B&N and it seems thorough. At 750 pages it'll keep me busy for awhile.

I do find it funny people really think 'the french never won a war'.
