A Dog Called Kitty 9/10

About a boy who moves to the country but has no friends.  he finds a dog in a barn that always comes to eat when he says "kitty kitty" to call the cats, so he calls his dog Kitty.  Then the dog dies and it is very sad.  Very deep book, lots of underlying emotional tones and messages and a great life lesson to be learned about the value of a friendship of two souls, not matter what species they are.  I almost cried twice whilst reading it.

A Survey of British Universities: Perspective a Polish Exchange Student 2/10

An autobiography of Leopold Polistik and his journey through the world of English Literary Universities, as both student, faculty and later dean.  It follows his travels through 4 different high profile universities, colleges and institutions on the British Island.  The book was well written but the subject matter was utter shit.  Polistik drones on and on about how shoddy most of the institutions were as a student and how corners were cut as faculty and later the corruption his faced as a dean.  This book will make you lose faith in the British education establishment as both a center of learning and as place where basic human rights are simply not upheld in the least.  In on particularly nasty part, a group of students squirt a bunch of lotion into a condom, which is then placed on a broom handle and inserted into the rectum of a student who has passed out from a cocaine, booze and queludes binge.  The student reports that he thinks he's been raped and is dismissed by the faculty.  Paints the British literary education system as a corrupt, inept and worthless venture, unable to produce any significant writers in the past 30 years.

hahahaha i don't believe that for one second

royal holloway is way too small to be mentioned in a book like that. and why did he become a 'dean'? which english university was he at? harvard? colombia? yale? guys were raped in an english university? are you sure it was a university and not a boarding school? universities are both-sexes here and we don't have gender separation.

what's the books ISBN code? it's not showing up on any searches or academic sites for me! must have been a pretty limited edition!

but even still

does it make you feel better about your own life- going nowhere? does it allow you to more easily comment on books you haven't read, or can't comprehend? if so... okay!!!!!

eh?

Royal holloway is ranked 19th in the UK, I'm pretty sure it's pretty large in terms of fame, if not student enrollment.

oh yeah thanks for telling me about my uni

it's one of the smallest unis. it has 8k students, total. it won't be mentioned in a book that goes around the 'top prestigious universities of the uk' (even though that book probably doesn't exist, anyway). there are easily 5 other 'big' unis that would take that biscuit over this one.

meh, just by reading the wiki page I can see that it's been featured in multiple "top university" guides, mostly those in English Newspapers.

Sunday Times Good University Guide, etc.

although probably oxbridge, LSE, and others probably rank higher and are more famous

on the same note i am currently reading 'The Fire Next Time' by James Baldwin

really really like his prose-style and the tone of his works. excellent writing. i put him right up there with douglass and du bois.

the perspective he has on the civil rights movement, and the idea of america generally, is actually quite refreshing. it seems to follow a lot in the pragmatist tradition of american thought-- a lot of meditating here in the vein of william james and john dewey. i actually got onto his work because richard rorty name-dropped it in 'achieving our country: how the american left lost hope', which incidentally is a great book too.

The Great Depression Ahead: How to Prosper in the Debt Crisis of 2010 - 2012 Harry S Dent

Interesting look at the demographic issues facing the world over the next few decades.
Mostly covers the US economy and the trouble its facing - baby boomers ceasing their spending and becoming a net burden is America's biggest crisis - but looks at the rest of the world also.

Australia seems set to be the least poor economy in the English speaking world for the foreseeable future, which is good news for me I suppose, and the only benefit of the Iraq war is the US might spend less on global policing in the future.

Guys, Christmas is coming and I need to get a/some book(s) for mum. She studies modern history and enjoys novels with some sort of historic context. Like, fiction that's historically correct, if you know what I mean.

She's especially fond of Asia, but other's will do as well. Ideas?

It's called historical fiction. And the wiki pages have list of series that are of that genre.

Anything by Bernard Cornwell is fantastic.

Can't help you there. It's not really something I keep up with.

But if she likes Asia, history, reading, and you want to keep her busy for a few months.

It's set in the 2nd AD and is a very old one but it's really the paradigm of historical fiction.

Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried is pretty good modern historical fiction that takes place in Asia.

you're so boring, you've been doing the asinine 'language elitism' thing for months and months

this is an anglophone forum made of mainly american/english speakers... i've told you this before...

you're not impressing anybody by telling them to go read something they can't even grasp, language-wise
