Me and the classics are like cats with new beds: I usually have to discover them on my own. Years and years of teachers spamming cliche book report assignments at me like Great Expectations, selected because it's all they know, have turned me off of (most) moldy oldies that have come recommended.

I can try to follow this, but I can't make any guarantees.

I just finished The Road after seeing some recommendation for it here IIRC, but I was a bit disappointed with it after hearing a lot of good things. I'll concede that it was a compelling read since it took only 2 days to finish, but the story wasn't particularly exciting, it did not provoke thought, and I felt the ending rather cheap as well.

Next up: The Picture of Dorian Gray

read some plays (they are all worth reading):

- friedrich dürrenmatt: der besuch der alten dame
- bertolt brecht: mutter courage und ihre kinder, der gute mensch von sezuan
- max frisch: biedermann und die brandstifter, andorra (i also recommend the novel homo faber)

Oh, right, thought you were referring to the book.

I do know who Kafka is, but I haven't read anything he's written..

Maybe you have to have a kid of your own to get emotionally involved. I know it had quite the opposite effect on me that it did on you.

As for uzique's idea...I'm neck-deep in a course right now and won't be able to participate (as much as I'd like to) until I get through at least my first exam.

Ugh, I expect this to take much longer than my previous book. Between the actual reading, occasionally switching to the notes, and looking up the words I don't know in the dictionary, I imagine this shall occupy me for some time.

It is quite short, I agree. However, the progress is slow as a result of the above causing me to spend only somewhat small amounts of time consecutively reading the novel.

Man, reading Sledge's account really illustrates how horrifying the Pacific campaign was and what it did to people's minds.

One of the greatest books ever.
Reminds me, if you want a deeper understanding its worth reading

One of the versions of this book (not entirely sure its this one) has a lot of background material, how they made the sound effects, some of the reasons behind the edits (Slartibartfast was originially Phartiphucborlz but was changed at the last minute - which is why the book makes no sense on that).

I also have the entire CD released radio show as MP3s, and the original radio show on tape (just need a tape deck and a phono input for my PC....)

And you have found the Infocom game haven't you?

i want to read this tbh

http://www.stillstandingstory.com/

"When SSG John Kriesel lost his legs and two buddies in a roadside bomb explosion, no one expected him to survive. He died three times on the operating table. Miracles, a lot of miracles, starting with a few grunts who refused to let him die in Iraq, ripped the young warrior from the grip of death and sent him on to four hospitals, thirty-five surgeries, and months of recovery and rehabilitation. Medical miracles put his body back together, but it was an incredible confluence of angels at every step along the way that breathed life into his shattered body.

This is not just another war story. This is the story of an ordinary young man who overcame extraordinary challenges with a lot of help from others, including many strangers, and he emerged stronger and more in love with his country, his wife, his children, and ultimately, his own life."

i think it's pretty sad tbh when someone like that gets exploited for a quick book-deal.

somebody making a dollar off the patriotism-buck whilst some guy is still sat there with half a body because of someone else's war.
