I only have a couple college books leftover and a copy of LoTR. Never really read my physical books so everything is digital.

That said I have not gotten very far in Atlas Shrugged since last posting.

That's good to hear. I would be heartbroken if you turned into Jay.

It felt like part of the young republican curriculum. I don't think I've ever finished it beyond a skim. Too freaking bizarre.

10 (insane) things I learned about the world reading Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged"

Scathing.

i mean, being scathing about rand is not hard. it's very low-hanging fruit to any sort of critic or scholar.

about on a par with a book reviewer going after dan brown. everyone knows it is trash.

An accessible, bullet-pointed critique is probably a good thing for helping to rescue people who are thinking about getting unironically into Rand. Being the object of a perpetual contest to see which reviewer can apply the most burn is the least of what that book deserves.

my favourite part is where she made all the lower-class people unimaginable slobs and slovens and all the oligarchs handsome young aryans.

i.e. jay and me.

The cigarette thing was pretty funny too. I'd almost forgotten until reading about it again.

I think I shall buy a nice print of LOTR and the Edgar Froese bio.

you call them editions, old man. a nice print is a thing you hang on your wall.

There's only been one edition of LOTR IIRC.
Pressing then, jesus fuck.

there has been literally dozens of editions of the LOTR. it doesn't help that his own son couldn't leave it alone.

an edition doesn't have to revise the text in any way, it just means re-presenting it. that could include cover, front material/prelims, paratexts, etc. it could just involve some minor corrections to print and typography, which happen even when the 'text' itself is not edited, due to production errors. if a book is acquired by a different publisher or passed from one list to another, it goes into a different 'edition'.

any edition could have infinite number of prints. the '50th anniversary edition' of the LOTR could be on its 22nd print run. only publishers are privy to its print no. it just means how many times they've ordered another print run from the printers. nothing changes in the text at all.

a pressing is what happens to a vinyl record. books aren't pressed anymore, it's an archaic term that appears only in ye olde publishing company names. journalists similarly refer to things 'going to press' when really they are submitting copy via digital files to be printed digitally. your copy of the LOTR is not coming off a gutenberg press or a linotype belching hot lead.

you seemed to take great pleasure in telling jay to use the right engineering terms for his deck, dilbert.

words have meanings. use the correct ones. people don't refer to their 'printing' or 'pressing' of a book. not unless they're antiquarians trading in rare books.

'there's only been one edition of LOTR' lol. you mean like the one ring? the perfect master text divulged by tolkien in a flash of inspiration! handed down from generation to generation like a dead sea scroll ...

I knew Rands ideals are heavily criticized but I never sought out reviews or discussions of her work.
Didn't know the book was so long and so boring and so bad. I still have it but when I do read it I just skim. It's basically killed my reading for the past 3 weeks.

I'm not sure what to read instead.

it’s nearly always better to read the book. especially if you’re looking for a summer diversion.

Grapes of Wrath is 500 pages and East of Eden is over 600. Brave New World is somewhere around 200. Just some perspective if you want light reading.

brave new world isn’t nearly as good a read. prefer huxley in his essays or some more experimental works. steinbeck is a good writer to spend a prolonged time with. it’s not challenging and goes down easy. very solid books.

I'm reading The Death of Expertise and he's written a full chapter about arguing on the internet and misinformation etc. He's ranting about people who believed Obama was a Muslim and how their minds couldn't be changed. I think he takes everything too seriously. I don't believe that most of the people repeating the theory were sincere, they were just pushing buttons and being infuriating on purpose.
