Wow...  I suppose amnesty might not be such a bad idea if they already are getting taxpayer benefits.  They should pay into the system, and the only way they will is if they are either given citizenship or some sort of work visa.

No offense Turquoise, but you live in North Carolina.  Come to a border state and you'll definitely have a different opinion.

/rant 1

Like the number of emergency rooms that have had to close because of so many illegals?
Like the 4 hour wait you have at an emergency room (that fucking sucked btw)
Like how your kid is in a classroom with 35 kids, 10 of whom are illegal.
Like how outside of every Home Depot there are 10-15 illegals looking for work yet border patrol cars/police don't do anything about it.
Like how illegals can get mortgages and apparently have a high default rate
Like how illegals drive without insurance (its mandatory now that we have uninsured moterist insurance on our policies)
Like how local businesses exploit illegals so they can underbid their legal competition (i.e. the construction/food service/lawn care businesses)

Now do I hate illegals, no, my parents came here legally and are now citizens (father joined the marines too), but I do hate the fact that the countries they come from encourage this kind of thing.

If these countries could take care of their citizens then they wouldn't need to break our laws.

Look at Mexico for example, just accross the border they have so many people being killed, more than in most parts of Iraq!!!  Last year we had a record year in kidnappings in San Diego County (U.S. citizens kidnapped into Mexico).

And the liberials in our country who ignore it because it'll get them votes, and the conservatives in our country that'll give them a source of cheap labor...bah.

I know what you're saying, but trust me...  I know what it's about.  North Carolina might not be a border state, but we are considered a "sanctuary state" for illegals.  Per capita, I think we have the 3rd or 4th largest proportion of illegals in our population among all states.

We have a lot of agriculture, which typically employs migrant labor of one form or another.  We also have huge construction and landscaping markets that also employ some illegals.  Locally speaking, there's a city not far from where I live that's called Siler City.  It's basically Little Mexico, and I'd bet the INS could have a field day over there.

I don't like the situation we're currently in because of illegals, but my general feeling on this is that they're using our system already.  The best thing we can do is get them to pay into it.  That's only going to happen through some sort of amnesty.

The only other option is to prosecute all employers of illegals vigorously, but that's not going to happen, because they are a large voting bloc.

I took your data of the estimated illegals per state and crossed them with the 2000 Census population for each state to determine the per Capita (number of illegals per United State Citizen) and came up with this:

Code:

California has 15.3 United States citizens for each illegal, while North Carolina has 39.1 citizens to illegal ratio.  California has the highest per capita illegals of all the 50 states.

Need I cite data that shows how much each illegal costs the government to support?

Households headed by illegal aliens imposed more than $26.3 billion in costs on the federal government in 2002 and paid only $16 billion in taxes, creating a net fiscal deficit of almost $10.4 billion, or $2,700 per illegal household.

I stand corrected.  Unless things have changed dramatically in the last 8 years, it looks like N.C.'s per capita ratio isn't so bad after all.  Thank you for giving me more reason to be hopeful about N.C.'s future.

But yeah...  Wow...  I suppose it is on a different level out in Cali...  Although, I'd be willing to bet that Texas has since surpassed Cali's ratio by now.  There's more economic growth and a much cheaper cost of living in Texas than in California.

Also, note that I didn't question the notion that illegals cost us a shitload.  My only suggestion is that enfranchising them would get them to pay us back some of what they cost us.  Deporting all of them seems like it would be rather difficult.

Hmm looking at that graph what is the percentage of population that is illegals.. And remember they're illegals so that number is probably lower then what it is..

Also I"m a firm believer that we as a country shouldn't be putting our well being at risk for someone else.. Illegals say they do the jobs here that no one wants to, well obviously they're not willing to do the jobs that people want in there countries.

If we've gotten to the point where we're giving illegals in-state tuition...   fuck it.

We're cheap labor friendly.  We're friendly to the idea of making more money no matter the costs it might incur on society.

Yeah we're pretty much have the old city state mentality.. It's funny that we're so much more advanced but we're basically running on the same society of thousands of years ago.

Nope, by using stolen identities most of them have payroll taxes withheld from their checks, unless the business operates on cash. They usually do not get tax returns however.

The government needs to secure the borders. Not doing so is turning us into a third world shithole.

My thoughts exactly. They take up way too much time ad money from those who are paying the taxes and shit.
