The only problem with using the Grid is that 40% of the energy that is produced by whatever is lost during transmission.

I think at the bear minimum that we have a hybrid solution with the homes that can supplement their grid usage with a safe home-based energy system based on what makes sense.

For example, in the South West where we have alot of sun year round it makes sense to put solar panels.  In the Central and North East United States it makes sense for Wind energy or some hybrid of the two.  Everywhere else I'm not sure its economically feasible.

And that's another thing, of all the alternative energy solutions solar to me is the most likely to see its way to our homes once they can get the costs down where it would take 2 years of normal usage to get your money back.  Right now the technology is 7-10 years before you see a profit...

You make excellent points here.

That's why efficiency is as important as energy sources. This idea, an Energy Internet, fascinates me.

As for the last point: feed-in tariff would do wonders. Paid for by a carbon tax would be optimal.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.
