Why that game has money and unit levels I don't know, because none of it makes the slightest difference. Where the AI fails it makes up for in the fact that you have to attack with one unit at a time.

Finished the campaign at the top with no effort. Makes no sense having George Washington lead a 6000 year old civilization from its infancy. Makes no sense having the United States be 6000 years old. The AI doesn't make any sense and is stupid. Unit stacks that attack one at a time are stupid. Diplomacy is over-simplified. Unit experience is irrelevant. Upgrades make no sense. There's no way my unupgraded knights could have taken out an ATTACK HELICOPTER. Uninstalled and went back to Europa Universalis 3. I've heard Civ3 was better, and am willing to give it a try.
Basically, the game's vast scope exceeded the developer's willingness to iterate detail. I sat down looking forward to a nice tribal stage with that tribal type of music I heard when I was setting up the game, and was promptly ushered into the next age. It reminded me of the abruptness of Spore.
But hey, I'm sorry for having a fucking opinion. If you want me to say something nice about it, I liked the music.
Unit experience and upgrades make perfect sense and are extremely effective. Again, it sounds like you just aren't using them appropriately - you can often have upgraded units more than 3x as strong as they started off if you use them correctly.
It all sounds to me like you're rubbish at Civ and have no grasp of how to play it properly. Civ 4 is the best of the bunch, but they're all pretty much identical, except 2, which is shit.
Roll on Civ 5....
Civ 4 is a great game but haters gonna hate.
If there's one thing I can fault it on it would be the balance of some of the wonders/techs. But overall me and some friends have sunk a few too many weekends into that game

Do you play Hearts of Iron, Victoria, Supreme Ruler 2020 or Europa Universalis at all? I'm not a newbie to grand campaign game style. I still have no idea where you're coming from or why you're hostile about it. The game makes no logical sense.Bertster7 wrote:

I believe you on the multiplayer, but the singleplayer campaign just left me feeling blah about the whole experience. I'll be fair and give Civ 5 a shot if there's a demo, but that's it.

2. The AI is generally decent, especially when you get to the higher difficulties.
3. Diplomacy is just fine.
4. Unit experience is very well done, and rewards smart combat.
5. Upgrades make great sense, use your upgrades to counter the enemy. If the last battle against him, Washington had fucking elephants, you'd start training your troops on killing elephants.
6. Why did you still have knights in the modern era? You're a fucking moron.
7. Go play your shit game.
The tribal stage is boring as fuck, why would you want to stay there for any longer?
