This was my last purchase:

Breitling isn’t super highly regarded compared to other Swiss watches but I’ve always loved Breitling and Navitimers in particular. I wanted this exact colour combination for a few years now and am super happy that I finally have it. I almost enjoy looking at the back more than the front!

I just need to spend some time working out how to get good at using the slide rule now. Apparently quicker than a calculator once you get good at it.

That color combo is very classic to wear with business attire without being very formal.  The chronograph is very good. Personally for the money I'd get a datejust, but as far as Breitling is concerned that's one of the classiest pieces I've seen.

Now you're gonna have to buy at least 2 more. Only thing worse than owning no watches is owning one.

guy out here complaining on the weekly about paying taxes but has $10,000 for something that might one day be as good as a pocket calculator. haha.

i don't tend to like the GQ glossy full-page advert watches aesthetic, the business-class timepieces mostly look gaudy as hell, but that's a very nice choice you made there nicky boy.

I've never been a fan of smart watches/having a screen on my wrist but am jealous of the health data you get from them. I've been trying to find a good 'smart clasp' but it seems it's pretty niche. The closest I found is this one from Sony but the reviews aren't great and it wouldn't suit a leather strap.

There's also Modillian but it looks a bit bulky and they seem to be a small start up that will inevitably go out of business and stop development

These things just don't look very good imo. I'm not opposed to having a smart health monitor or whatever but I don't want to cringe every time I look down at my wrist.

i feel the same as dauntless. the last few iOS updates have pushed the health monitoring stuff in a big way and really foregrounded their 'health' app. looks fun, if you're down with sending all of your vital signs to a donut-shaped building in california, of course, but 90% of it is obviously dependent on the apple watch.

they look lame. any time i see an adult with a smartwatch i'm like, 'what a fucking geek loser'. oh, you can read your emails on that 2 inch screen? it's really that much more convenient than pulling the phone out of your pocket? lame!

not to mention, all this health monitoring smart technology stuff preys on the same basic consumer gullibility as home gym equipment. spending $800 on a smart watch that tells you your BP, RHR, and blood o2 at a glance isn't actually going to help you get fit. it relies on people duping themselves with the usual consumer psychology.

I feel like there's a giant spectrum of stuff people buy to improve themselves but never actually use.

I rarely buy myself anything nice or frivolous, I do rarely spend on guns - but they're going to get hammered and worn out so don't really pay a lot of attention there either.

Someone is apparently attending my local championships with a Korth, it'll be interesting to see one I guess.

Eur4000 is just a bit much for a revolver which is going to get bashed and battered.

I just finished reading an article about people suffering below the poverty line and unable to afford healthy food even with JobSeeker (one guy with diabetes basically killing himself just to stay fed). I'd say you have it pretty nice being able to debate on whether or not to drop 4k on a revolver.

The revolver is an investment in his social safety net. If things don't work out he could always use the revolver.

IMO, it's an extremely corny-looking gun, like a shooter's version of a gamer chassis. Some of those target events look more like a cyberpunk faire.

Yes, right now things are good, something could wipe me out of course.

I have two guns for which the current retail is U$2700, otherwise I have cheap tastes.

It is a strange looking gun, there's literally no reason to have picatinny rails on a sport revolver.

i mean, it would be weird for a childless, unmarried middle-aged man in mid-career to not have some expensive or indulgent hobbies.

i don't mean that uncharitably. all my friends in their 30s or late 20s, who are just getting up the rungs of their chosen careers and starting to enjoy a bit of disposable income for the first time, are buying their long lusted-over boy's toys, the BMW M3's and rolexes and fancy wardrobes and whatnot. it's what this whole system of consumption and canny marketing is set up for.

i've spent £10,000s on my DJ'ing and musical hobby. i doubt i'd have such an exorbitant DJ'ing setup and home hi-fi if i'd got a local milkmaid pregnant at 22.

I don't even see my hobbies as expensive or indulgent, I invest about 10x what I spend on 'fun' stuff and the extra return easily funds any leisure activity.
Tools I just buy what I feel like, probably have $10k at least.

Its useful to know that 50+ men buy the gadgets they couldn't have when they were 16-30, or toys at 5-10.
For investment purposes you can identify and hoover up aspirational items now and sell them when your target market hits the age.

I would pay actual cash money for a mint 1999 Subaru WRX two-door, and an original Dinky Thunderbird 2 - would have to be original working legs though.

i mean, all my music gear is an 'investment', it's all grown in value, the equipment and (some of) the records. but it would be self-serving to say that i spend $250/month on records or whatever as an 'investment'. it's not, it's an indulgence.

i honestly can't understand why you invest '10x as much as you spend on yourself' but then don't own your own property? is there any better class of asset, in places like australia particular, for returns on investment? but there we are. you're the warren buffet of petrol stocks.

I wish I could liquidate my MTG collection. I mean I could but slowly putting everything on Ebay or sending them into the internet shops...ugh. Last I checked my collection is somewhere around $10,000. If someone offered me that much cash to take it all off my hands I would do it in a heartbeat.

I feel the same way about a good chunk of my accumulated kitsch. There isn't a lot of it, but enough to stand out a bit in storage. Just don't feel like going to the bother of sifting through it all for valuation. Could ebay by the box I suppose.

I wouldn't think of selling any of my collectable stuff, at least not right now. I'm much more interested in accumulating more cool shit at this point in my life.

Some of it I'd gotten for the sake of display in spaces I can't really dedicate anywhere in a small living space to. It annoys me suspecting that my interests will probably have changed by the time I move, and that I hung onto a lot of stuff for nothing. It's probably past time to Kondo a lot of it off to second-hand stores.

Very soon will be a great time to buy a job lot of Buzz Lightyears.
In 20-30 years the gay iconography will put the prices through the roof.
Just need a place to store a container full of gay space-dolls.

I've never had the heart to consider hoarding children's toys to drive up price, I mean ffs there's got to be a limit. Do we really live on Planet Ferengi?

Wait till they're out of fashion and being sold off at a discount
Store for 20-30 years
Profit

How is that driving up the price?

Yeah too bad for those guys but what's that got to do with people buying expensive things?

I just got this from some random:
