I'm surprised no one died at this. It was all over the news at the time. Long before any economic crisis too.

An estimated 5,500 people turned out at the Richmond International Raceway in hopes of getting their hands on one of the 4-year-old Apple iBooks.
Aha.

AHAHAHAHA.

Not only were they fighting over an iBook, but they were 4 year old iBooks.

Well who wouldn't fight over owning a 4 year old?

Ohh. A 4 year old iBook...

Well that's just silly.

Seriously, my solution is the best. Forcing these people into lines, whose borders are delineated by those big heavy concrete barricade things, and which are built in a zig-zag shape would help stop the stampeding. Furthermore, have some fucking cops around for these big crowds. Nothing says "cut the crap you fucking morons" like a boatload of tear gas, or high-pressure water hoses (preferably the ones that are mounted on big armored trucks), or those Active Denial systems.

Actually, I see nothing in this story or those pictures that should warrant "mercy" for any of them.

In fact I gotta retract something I said earlier, in regards as to what happened to the victim and the fact that they all stood around and laughed. This was not a random sampling of American society.

In lowingland eveerything is binary - if someone says 'things aren't looking so good' it gets read as 'people are starving and poor'. It is this and his disregard for commonly understood economics that makes responsing to him on pretty much anything absolutely pointless. He lives in a make believe idealised world in his mind, the rest of us interpret and deal with a non-binary reality.
Ahhhhhhh Cam, how are things on the mountain?

First of all my post said nothing about global economic events. I am referring to one of the economic indicators that gauges the health of our economy. That indicator is started off by black friday. Now, since we Americans are supposed to be suffering, starving, freezing, and out of money for gas and homes, black friday should have been a dismal failure for our countries retailers. It was not, this stampeding bullshit happened all over the country. The fact that this guy got killed makes this event stand out. Nothing more. We Americans are supposed to broke remember?

I'm actually in Munich on a weekend break with my gf. Me being able to engage in such activities must surely mean that the Irish economy is entriely sound and insulated from any kind of economic malaise....

a) Americans supposed to be starving, freezing, suffering and out of money? Who said that? Noone. Such ridiculous exaggerations are exactly why debating you is pointless.

b) Unemployment levels in the US are increasing. Fact. Home repossessions are going up. Fact. Companies are going out of business. Fact.  Companies are having credit issues. Fact. Man gets stampeded to death? Fact. But not very relevant. QED

Actually to be honest the fact that it happened at Walmart is indicative. People are still irresponsible and spend money on material crap rather than investing their extra money. This year they wnted to save some money so more people went to Walmart. So many that a guy got trampled to death.

a. Actually, this crisis was compared to the Great Depression, so yeah that is what is implied since people were starving, freezing, suffering and out of money. So if there is an exaggeration it was not by me.

b. Unemployment levels are rising, fact, home repossessions are going up fact, Companies are going out of business fact. Companies have credit issues fact. Yer correct about all of this but now we see Americans are spending money like crazy. fact.......The point of the entire thread Cam, thank you for helping me prove it with your observations.

Pretty sure that was gang-related violence. Terrible, but it could've just as easily happened at a Subway or Popeye's.

"Our understanding is that this act seems to have been the result of a personal dispute between the individuals involved. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to associate the events of today with Black Friday."
