Court Orders Iranian Man Blinded

A court in Iran has ruled that a man who blinded a woman with acid after she spurned his marriage proposals will also be blinded with acid. The ruling was reported in Iranian newspapers on Thursday. The punishment is legal under the Islamic Sharia code of qias or equivalence, which allows retribution for violent crimes. The court also ordered the attacker, 27-year-old Majid Movahedi, to pay compensation to the victim. The ruling was a response to her plea to the court in the Iranian capital Tehran for retribution.

I read this and thought it seemed like the kind of thing lowing might agree with. What do you reckon guys?

Yeah I agree. Harsh sentence but usually sentences aren't harsh enough. People rape and kill and only get couple years in prison with good food, fitness and some even have sex there.

I thought you might. The Iranian mindset on the issue of justice (in a lot of cases but not all) is very similar to that of many Americans form what I can see.

I don't know if I quite agree with this but I certainly won't be shedding any tears for this guy... he won't be shedding any tears either!

Nah, he's somewhat right in terms of our feelings toward "eye for an eye" punishment. We're one of the few First World countries that still has the death penalty, for example.

Still, I'd have to agree that this blinding seems justified to me as well.

no, not really. it is still up to individual states for the death penalty. and, it rarely happens if you think about it.

Well, let me clarify... a large portion of our population would support its use far more often, but our actual officials are reluctant to use it.

Someone might get the death penalty for rape in a state like Texas. Again, I'm not really making a judgment as to whether or not I agree with something like this, but there are similarities.

Exactly, which is why the original point comparing America's legal system to the Iranian one wasn't so far-fetched...

They're both very vindicative, to be fair. And both make law into quite a public affair too- although I suppose for differing reasons.

14 states don't have it at all. And you generally only get it except in cases that involve something like the rape and murder of a half a dozen children.

Your death sentence is based on a principle that defines vindication, my comment was not unfair. My point about making the legal process public for "different reasons" implied a compliment on America's behalf- aren't some of your court processes televised or made public for something along the principles of freedom and good faith in your fair, legal system? I would imagine Iran's public law is there, contrarily, for coercion and public example.
