Medvedev in Cuba to improve ties

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is in Cuba for the final stop in a tour of Latin America intended to strengthen Russian influence in the region. Mr Medvedev and Cuban President Raul Castro are expected to sign deals on nickel mining and and oil exploration. The Russian leader arrived in Havana from Venezuela, where he and President Hugo Chavez signed a deal on promoting nuclear energy for civilian use. Military co-operation also featured in Mr Medvedev's talks with Mr Chavez.

Is this the beginning of a sequel to the Cuban missile crisis or innocent trade talks? I know sequels are never as good as the original but I wouldn't blame the Rooskies if they did go down that avenue given the US's current missile shenanigans.

Russia is weak now and this is just sabre rattling... that being said... I'm sure the powers that be are still watching what the rooskies are up to...lol...

MOSCOW — Russia's military is riddled with weakness. Its equipment is outdated. Its technology is decades behind the West. And its capacity for battlefield communications and intelligence gathering is terrible.

In short, Russia has a mid- to late-20th century military in a 21st century world.

That and more was revealed during Russia's war with U.S.-backed Georgia last month, when its troops routed the small Georgian army but looked woefully short of the fighting power of nations like the United States.

Micheal Moore should have stayed in France.. or at least somewhere where it was at least halfway believable. His rubbish has been debunked by numerous people. Example.

Or of course you could just talk to some Cubans.

Sorry, but Russia is strong enough with only 1 Nuclear missile hitting its mark for it to be a bad day...

I think Medvedev just wants to put a bit of a scare in. I mean, Russia hasn't had the best of histories and he can do a lot worse for the country than he can better it right now.

Russians should place some defensive missiles on Cuba. Iran and other middle-eastern countries seem a big threat nowadays.

I think Russia should place missiles in Venezuela to protect their ally from Colombian aggression, given that they seem to continually infringe on their border.

This won't become a 2nd Cuban Missile crisis because, this time at least, Americans aren't actually on the eve of navally-invading Cuba.

I read an interesting journal that claimed there was sufficient evidence within the US government/military to suggest that America was mobilizing to annex Cuba; arguing that the Cubans signed deals with the Russians and set-up missile silos in an act of self-defence against what they saw as a hostile and intimidating threat. Keyword: 'Interesting', not unquestionably true. Hence the wink, it's meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

Guess not a lot of people have read these alternative historical interpretations!

I once read that Hitler was a nice guy and was just burning Jews to stay warm because he ran out of fire wood.

Oh I forgot it was a defensive missile system that can't actually take down powerful long distance missiles... or could at least distinguish between Russian and non Russian missiles. Pretty cool system by the sound of things.

I think you missed the point of what this system was designed for entirely. But I'm not going to bother explaining because it'd be like driving onto a roundabout and then having all exits blocked off and my brakes are dead.
