T.A - Territorial Army

"As a trained member of the TA, you are liable for call out under the Reserve Forces Act 1996. If you join the T.A you indicate that you are prepared to take part in active service"

Does anyone know what sort of circumstances someone would be "called out" I have heard it is in the case of war, and shortage of manpower... are we at war just now?

Can anyone shed any light on this. Please anyone against the Armed Forces etc hold your tongue and go somewhere else.

I see, thank you for that. I was confused with the whole politics of what's going on in Iraq etc. Does anyone know the fine details of this thing? can they call me up to join the army when they are low on manpower or what.

Sounds like the individual ready reserves in the Army. You aren't actively drilling full-time (active duty) or part-time (reserve), and you don't get paid, but you're expected to be ready to get called in to action if they need you.

I see, I think!

But what sort of chance would I have of being called up does anyone know?

Correct me if I'm wrong:

You are thinking of signing up (possibly for monetary gain) but want to make sure there is minimal chance of actually being called in?  Doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.

I am thinking of singing up to the T.A in the future as a possibility. For the challenge it gives, and the extra something in my life. I just want to know what sort chance I would have of being called up, obviously I have a life here. If there is like an 80% chance of me having to do a 6 month tour because they are very short maned right now. I would consider against it.

While I don't know your laws, if they are anything like our National Guard, you could be called up in cases of natural disaster.  Obviously that isn't fighting, but you could be called in to help with rescue, and possibly some policing duties to prevent riots, theft, and further destruction of property.

Aren't we at war with "terror"? Or did we defeat terror already?

This.

There are loads of potential scenario's that could result in you being needed in that capacity.  If you are this concerned about being called up, I'd say it's probably not for you.

I'm not concerned about being called up, if I could avoid it I would. I have a happy life here, and I just want to know the chances of me having to say goodbye to everyone I love for 6 months you know?

I just want to know the in's and out's of why they would call me up.

In the TA you "volunteer" to go on operations in Iraq/AfghanIran. So as if you don't want to fight then you can spend your time firing at targets in Scotland

So you'd be signing up for the equivalent of the US Army Reserve correct?

They might start a major war with, idk, France and require soldiers from reserve components so that they can cycle soldiers (instead of keeping some guy there for 2 years, they keep him for 1 then send in a reservist). If it's like the National Guard, there might be a flood and so you'd be called up to help get people out of their homes.

Given the situation in Iraq (isn't Britain pulling out?) I wouldn't worry TOO much about getting called up, but if the UK sends people over to Afghanistan there'd be a higher chance of getting called up.

Don't join unless you're willing to be called up even a minute after signing.

The chances of active duty whilst in the Twats Army is slim.

Last time I checked there was ~95K in the British Army and around 40 in the TA, we don't even have 10K in Afghanistan/Iraq, you do the math....

Go ARNG.  Get paid for your weekends, get the college tuition benefits, and burn up your IRR time all at once.

That non-paid, no-benefits IRR deal is a crap deal

(or, whatever the Scottish equivalent is)
