I think everybody would be better off if they just steered the fuck clear of the only nation in the world without a government. The ocean is quite big - I'm sure there is at least one alternative route...

True that. But is it too much too ask merchant ships to mount a couple of gatling guns on their boat to ward off two-bit RPG-toting 'yaaarrrhhh' pirates?

i know...pirates still make me giggle.

hell, all they would need to do is mount a .50, or even a little 40mm cannon....once you put a hole in their paddle boat, they wont be worried about trying to get your boat.

" ... a key maritime route leading to the Suez Canal through which some 30 percent of the world's oil is transported."  To reiterate another poster's comment (who shall remain anon) '...and we all know what that means."

We could of course entertain the Straits of Malacca, yea, yea, dat's da ticket !

Yeah, but some security "experts" think that mounting a .50cal could escalate the situation.  "You get a .50cal, then they start carrying RPGs"...oh wait, they already are!

Marines. Seriously. Thats how we came about in 1775, we were recruited by the Navy to protect them from pirates. We were recruited in a bar in Philadelphia and worked for salted pork and ale. Lol.

Happy Birthday Marine Corps 1775-2008!!

But seriously, whay cant these companies hire a civilian security team to sail with them that are trained to combat these sorts of problems.

A couple of fucking cannons onboard your boat would put the tin hat on most pirates' ambitions towards your cargo I reckon... what's the maritime law regarding such acts of defence? I presume it's International waters where the bulk of these attacks take place?

Actually when I went to classes for my boaters license this was the one part I paid attention to. You are allowed to protect your vessel from anyone attempting to overtake it with deadly force. So be it that those trying to board your vessel are not part of an organized, internationally recognized maritime enforcement such as a nations Coast Guard. In other words, you can kill you sum pirates.

The laws surrounding the ownership of cannon on the other hand, do restrict it. The easiest path is to get a firearms licence for your weapon of choice.

My recent experience on a barramundi fishing boat entailed a .44 magum revolver. Big silver one like the ones in John Wayne movies. It was used for shooting cros tbh but you get the picture.

Well, chances are he'll have to dock at some point, which means having some sort of documentation that proves he's allowed to have two batteries of 12 pounder cannon mounted on both port and starboard sides beneath the deck.

Yahaaaaaar! It's a pirates life for me!

Wouldn't it be cheaper to keep up Navy involvement rather than have every civilian ship mounted with vast anti-piratical weaponry?

Not inferring that anyone said John Wayne used a chrome plated .44 Magnum; I don't recall them as being overly popular until Make My Day Callahan evolved (mid '70sish).  I did encounter a few (very) revolvers in my latter '60s days in Texas, none of them plated.

More likely would have been nickel (1840ish) plate using the .44-40 Winchester (1873) combining single cartridge pistol/rifle capabilites.

The .44-40 evolved into the 44 Special (1907 S&W Triple Lock) then to the elongated 44 Special case (hence magnum) circa mid '50s, my first known bigger is better era.

The availability of then plated weapons is more the typical Hollywood exaggeration than fact.  The increased cost (say $13 vs $10 or $27 vs $20) was generally only affordable by newly arriving Eastern city slickers (soon to be land barons) or those of dubious reputation (gamblers, highwaymen -highway being considered last year's moderately improved cattle trail-including the above mentioned now land barons).

The Duke of course, being the epitome of the citizen's citizen, would not have owned a plated weapon less of course it was presented by a well to do city council as part of their Peace Officer Of The Year award.
