Coke bottle for a silencer?

I was watching a few films (namely Shooter and On Deadly Ground), and I noticed that both Steven Segal and Mark Whalburg's characters in the movies taped empty plastic coke bottles on the ends of their weapons and used them as silencers. I was wondering if it could be done in real life rather than as something of a "movie gimmick" so to speak.

Yes I am aware that using a coke bottle would reduce range, accuracy, and killing power (so NOT TO BE USED OVER LONG RANGES), but Im still curious..... (and no I dont have my own rifle/pistol and I dont have access to one either, otherwise I wouldnt ask, I would just do it).

Enough so you'd think one shot would be the maximum effectiveness if it does work.

I believe that you can use a 2 litre coke bottle, silencer is good for one shot...

never tried it though, this is of course with a pistol, probably 9mm

It's an embelishment of the basic physics of a silencer. Containing and dissipating combustion gasses can be marginally accomplished with a coke bottle, once, but the sonic crack will still be audible unless subsonic ammunition is used, as awsmfox pointed out.

a heavy pillow is just as effective.

It only reduces the crack of the hot gasses leaving the barrel. The initial bang of the gunpowder isn't reduced, so it's unlikely the shooter will hear any difference, or really, anyone close enough.

Uhhh........thats where 95% of the sound comes from m8, the gases leaving the barrel but mostly sonic boom of bullet etc etc

Also, Reaper, a coilgun doesn't need nearly as many moving parts.

Just a hell of a lot of circuit boards and a lot of high-conductive wire.

And even then a several tesla magnetic field.

And a battery pack the size of a small car.

And a lot of timing.

And the ability to make a barrel.

None of which I can do.

And didn't any of your teachers teach you how to build a nuclear bomb? It was part of the course for us.
