It was okay. A war movie where the main character never fires a bullet at an enemy.
I take offense. Jarhead is not a war movie. Jarhead is a people movie, that happens to take place during a war. Its a movie about growing up, about maturity, and about people. Its about what happens to the human psyche when it's removed from the normal, everyday drudgery and slammed down in the middle of a whole new, different drudgery.
Anyway, to compare it to Full Metal Jacket is a totally unfair comparison. FMJ IS a war movie, whereas Jarhead isn't. Well, to be fair, FMJ is actually an anti-war movie, in the same mold as Apcoalypse Now and Good Morning Vietnam. Jarhead doesn't judge, it just lays out the facts.
Now, this movie is actually based on a VERY good book that was released in 2003, called Jarhead. The author of the book, Anthony Swofford, is also the protagonist, and his is the character played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Its a true story (with some liberties taken, obviously), and I happened to like it quite a bit.
And don't pirate it. Pay to see it, or better yet, go to the Library and check out the book. Its better than the movie could ever hope to be.
