When you say the answer is a letter between A and D, the answer is either B or C. It can't be A or D.

To Hurricane: Your equation is an identity, it is already a solution. You have to use it to derive other solutions, and the letters don't represent numbers but rather functions.

An example of this is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger_equation. This is an expression, and does not have a general solution which is useful. You have to apply different restrictions to use it. In physics, we calculated psi (the trident looking thing) which is the wavefunction of a quantum particle in an infinite and finite well. You can equally use that equation to solve other problems.
