They're kinda []=[] that shape. Blue, as I said in subject. And heavy.

I believe they're used by people to exercise, build and tone muscle.

Now, seeing as how I've always been a lazy arsed runt, and one of those people that can eat any amount of anything and not get fat, I thought I might, if I can be bothered, try waving them about a bit, see what happens.

So, here's the thing - being a person that hates pain and who likes to do things properly, could anybody post or link me to a set of those blob-person diagrams of some good upper-body exercises, that will a) help me not rip my tendons out and b) maybe build or at least tone what little I have?

Dunno what weight they are - I'll check next time I'm downstairs...

Debate and/or (the reason I put it here) Serious Talk only please.

Oh, also, does one eat before or after exercise (for best energy/nutrient delivery efficiency)?

Yeah. Them's the things. Alien blue things from the planet exercise as far as I'm concerned.

And, yeah, obviously, you lift 'em up and down and the like, but I want to know like "do this (nice diagram) to exercise such and such muscle group, and this (another nice diagram) to exercise those" and so on...

1:  Bicep curl, make sure your back, shoulders move as little as possible, i suggest doing one arm at a time.

I'm assuming you're not going for protein shakes, so here's what you can do with regular food:

It helps to eat a little bit about an hour and a half before you exercise. It's not super-important, but a little protein helps fuel your muscles during the workout. If you eat too much, though, your stomache starts pulling too much blood to aid in digestion and your muscles won't get enough oxygen.

Post workout you need protein. Everyone probably knows that. What you need BEFORE protein is a little bit of good carbs. Once you're done working out, eat a small piece of whole-grain bread or a little oatmeal. Your body needs glycogen before it can start rebuilding muscle. You get that from whole-grains. It doesn't take much, even a couple croutons would do the trick.

For your protein, nothing beats a lean steak. Beef has the perfect types of protein your body needs to rebuild. Chicken is also excellent. A big glass of milk or a few eggs are great too. Honestly, just about any kind of animal product will do the trick, but some work a little better than others. Here's how I would rank the effectiveness: beef, milk, chicken, lamb, eggs, fish, pork, shellfish, everything else that moves under its own volition.

Take it easy when you start. Whenever I take a week off I get da DOMS. I don't realize it until a couple days later . Make sure you are drinking plenty of water as well. Dumbells are great though. There really isn't too much that you cant hit if you have dumbbells. It's important to just get started.. get into a routine first. Then worry about supplements etc. You will probably get encouraged to do more. I'll type out my workout later if you want it.

the marine corps daily dozen.

i am quickly getting back into the shape i was in when i did the hardest labor work of my life. my t shirts are getting tight around the chest and arms, and i feel much healthier.

of course, i work out everyday and i somewhat thrive on the punishment.

its a character thing for me as well as a physical exercise.

that's 16 though, i need 12 - too lazy.

and how heavy are those dumbbells?  you better hope they're 30 or more, or you'll find they'll need replacing soon.

You think stone age man didn't have a go on a 'human milk bar', as I like to call them, from time to time?

I know I woulda.

You'll grow to like the pain in a sadomasochistic sort of way... it means your exercise is having an effect.

I used to take protein shakes after training but now I go with raw eggs (usually 2 or 3, straight down the hatch Rocky-style and try not to taste it). Bare in mind that you have a 15 minute window of 'emergency recovery' after training where your muscles cry out for protein so it can rebuild muscle tissue - this is when you should take your protein drink or egg drink.

Also, as Kmarion pointed out, drink lots of water after training because you will dehydrate quite easily.

Also, don't lift weights every single day, take at least a day's break in between because recovery is just as important as the exercise itself. If you want to train every day then focus on alternating muscle groups or something. If you continually work the same muscles day in, day out you will find you make progress a lot slower.

There's no risk of that happening.
