You're saying because I don't suffer the negative side effects my choice is still a poor one? I fail to see how the logic in that.

Or maybe you mean to point out that my point is moot by offering an equally useless statement? Again, lost on me.

Perhaps you just felt like offering another situation in which there is a subset of the population which does not represent the general whole?

Break it down for me, this shit must be written in code.

I fundamentally disagree with you, and side with Machiavelli. If you get away with it, it is always the right thing to do.

That's not what Machiavelli thought at all.

It is in The Prince. Machiavellian virtue is not only those basal pagan qualities he outlines to Lorenzo Medici in the work, but anything that gives you power. If your action attains you power, it's a virtuous action.

I'm going with what my Harvard educated professor who has been studying Machiavelli for 50 years says.

Um Machiavelli didn't defend all in the name of keeping power. The Prince isn't a ringing endorsement for cruelty and malevolence. It's a pointing out of the political reality of the time as well as a sort of guide of actions for Lorenzo (as well as a resume). Machiavelli goes out of his way to point out that not everything done should be done for it's sake but instead for keeping and maintaining power and that some things should be avoided and that there are some limits. It's not a endorsement of "if you can get away with it, do it". There is a difference between arbitrary power and legitimate power. He goes into this in the book.

Finally I think you have a misunderstanding of the meaning of "virtuous" as according to Machiavelli. Mach is thought of as the bridge between old Greek Philosophy and modern because of his decoupling of morality and politics.

If you want to throw around academic qualifications- my school is ranked #2 in the world for philosophy and we went over this just a few days ago in one of political philosophy classes so the fact you can regurgitate from a Professor that went to Harvard is worth poop.

How isn't it? The judge of virtue and morality is the person or people who hold the most power, and if your actions attain you that power, you cast yourself as virtuous. The victor writes the history, in a sense.

you have two choices:

99% chance of dying
1% chance of winning $5

picking the second choice is illogical regardless of the outcome (unless you turn it into some stupid hypothetical situation)

I could waste my time writing you an essay as to why A.) the power you maintain is your own B.) the limits are anything that limits your own power C.) that arbitrary power and legitimate power are the same thing D.) that Machiavelli was the first step away from classic philosophy, not a bridge to it.

And the Kennedy School of Government is the best for political philosophy, but I'm sure your school is great too, Mac.
