You certainly have no idea what your talking about if you think I'm being spoon fed opinions from lecturers about world cultures and societies.
I'm an undergraduate studying Information Technology.
It's hardly a conductive environment for socio-political discussion.
Not all University courses are theoretical and academic, many are vocational and actually involve extensive experience in and around the industry. You know - real, practical involvement in the field. You're always going to fail when it comes to making sweeping generalisations and assumptions about University students, there's just an unquantifiably huge variety within the system. Whereas you're right, some graduates are erudite and scholarly - the academic intellectual type - others are extremely hands-on and have a great application of the skills that they pick up in University. Don't forget, the University experience isn't only about learning new theories and facts, it's a life lesson.lowing wrote:

I would rather follow the guy that knows the way, over the guy with the map.
Anyway, it's still a pretty stupid thing to say, despite my refutation. Not all highly-educated/qualified people are inherently incompetent- just because you're experienced the aforementioned in your own organisations, it doesn't mean this is a universal problem.

I've pointed out a few times now how many different ethnicity friends I have, Australia is proudly multicultural, yet you seem to think I along with most everyone else who disagrees with you that we are spoon fed our own beliefs by Professors who have no degree in the field of Sociology.
I do not remember saying your professors had no degrees, they got them from classrooms as well. Look, education is important do not get me wrong. I will maintain however, that it does not trump real life experience.
I will take a guy with experience over a guy with classroom instruction any day of the week.

Lowing makes out like it's some sort of Liberal conspiracy and each teacher pushes forward an agenda. There are actually strict guidelines in Australian universities as to what political commentary those qualified are even allowed to express, I'm sure there is similar at other universities also.
Marine, you were surrounded with strangers when you started your training, I'll bet most of the people you met became your friends, or at least bonded with? It's no different here.
Except you don't get shot at (no offense meant by that, mate).

No thankyou, i have plenty of realworld friends. I can't comment for bebo/myspace, but facebook is just another tool that lets you communicate. Say you want to organise a night out, you send the details to your mates through facebook, and it's all centralised. Ever tried to organise something for 50people + using the phone? It gets confusing.lowing wrote:

I know for you, who takes his teeth out and fills his hot water bottle before he goes to bed, that all this modern techy stuff might be a little confusing.
Don't worry, keep your head in the sand.

hot water bottles are the shit during the unkind DC winter.

Yep, but people end up forgetting times, location, dress etc etc. With facebook they just find the event, and it's all there. Facebook in some regards is vastly different from Myspace/Bebo, you only add people you are actually friends with. It's a bit like an interactive address book.usmarine wrote:

lol at digging your little hole even deeper. Ironic given that Islam places a high level of importance on personal hygiene - hence the washing before prayer and the numerous fountains and wash basins that surround mosques....lowing wrote:

lol. So now you're going to generalise on the personal hygiene of 1.3 billion people too. It's funny - I just got back from Bosnia and every toilet I used had toilet paper. My accommodation also included a shower. In fact, same went for Turkey, Morocco and Jordan... Perhaps they had no toilet paper because you blew the fucking toilet paper factory up, eh?usmarine wrote:

Now who is generalizing? All of the US Military likes to kill innocent people and engage civilian targets? You went to Bosnia and had toilet paper....well I too have been to Bosnia but I didn't kill any innocent fucking people and apparently spared all the necessary factories so you could wipe your ass.CameronPoe wrote:

I think you can trace it back to where lowing mentions Islam ... again.DonFck wrote:

no. i think you can trace it back to where 10 people pile up on lowing and ruin a discussion as usual.CameronPoe wrote:

Iraq happens to be a wartorn nation where running water and electricity, never mind toilet paper, are not guaranteed. Not very indicative of the catch-all 'Islam' referred to by lowing (he didn't say 'Iraqis').usmarine wrote:

no cam. lots of places never had that stuff before the war. i was on the kuwait/iraq border in '98 and people in basra would walk outside, take a shit, pull up their pants and keep walking.CameronPoe wrote:
