Sci fi-ish? Sure.  One of the best books written?  Hell yes
Read that, followed by Ender's Shadow.

I'd also recommend Sphere.

Read Ulysses and A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man by James Joyce.

Top two novels of the century in my honest opinion. They will blow your tits off.

Please excuse any spelling errors, this is an english lit student posting at 2am whilst very drunk... not in the best mindset for giving advice.

1984, Animal Farm and Keep The Aspidstra Flying by Orwell.
The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown.

Lighter humour, any Douglas Adam book, H2G2 etc,
any of Rober Rankins books, plus Terry Pratchet.

Irvine Welsh is a good read too, it just depends on your style of reading

I couldn't get through the first couple of chapters. Bought a DVD box set of it though. Still that's like 6+ discs!

Devil's Guard.

This is a first hand record of an unregenerate Nazi who escaped the war crimes trials in Europe after WWII and joined the French Foreign Legion.
Sent to Indochina to fight the Viet Minh, the German battalion shot, bombed, tortured and bayonetted the enemy.
Devil's Guard is one man's personal document of reprisals and counter-reprisals, of criminal violence on both sides, of outrages against humanity, of war at its rawest, cruellest and most gruesome.

Bloody good book and apparantly very popular with American forces out in Iraq.
