Someone explain to me what, for example 1st and 10 means? I understand the 1st is the number of downs, but what's the second number?
10 is the yards needed for anther 1st down.
What decides how many yards they need?

when you begin a possession, you start at 1st down and 10 yards to go. if you lose 3 yards on 1st down, it would be 2nd and 13 on the next play. get it?
So if you made 10 yards in the first down, it'd go back to 1st and 10?
