Cats 8/10

There was nothing wrong with it, the concept is as weird as the stage show - which was hugely popular - there you go.

The lead actress was talented and cute

and who could find anything wrong with Taylor Swift covered in fur.

The critics gang up on one film a year, I guess this was it.

dilbert as a furry. a new development, but not a surprising one.

I would feel totally unashamed openly dating that Taylor Swift cat.

I rather date Taylor Cat than a black chick or ugly girl. I would totally make a Twitter account and post pictures of us doing things together like dressing up as the others species for Halloween. I would put a ring on it so fast.

What bugs me about this one is it seems like it's trying to be at once stage, yet not stage. CGI costumes are an interesting ongoing experiment, at least. A lot of viewer criticism of the new one seems to come down to "aaaaah, my eyes, they burn" one-line reviews for the memes.

More like tweaked, really.

They did the same thing with Sonic. I wonder if this will become a trend.

If you had a Taylor Swift Cat as a friend and had her and others over for a X-Mas or whatever party and after everyone else has left she crawls into your bed and gives you this look...you would tell her she had to leave?

it's a failure as a movie precisely because it doesn't know how to adapt a stage-show into a movie.

movies mostly need plots. that often involves character development and drama. you know, three acts. protagonists with an arc. stage musicals don't need this: they require catchy songs and a spectacle. hell, in the hey-day of the musical, when theatre-land was crossing over to the silver screen, writers had no problem elaborating more on the 'plot' aspect to suit the new medium. there are tonnes of west end shows and musicals that succeeded as movies. cats is a massive failure.

that the source material was a bunch of nonsense poems written for eliot's amusement does not exactly make for the most promising movie, tbh.

stupid idea.

This reminds me of me attempting watching the Hamilton play with my class. Last days of school I put the play on for the kids and we couldn't follow what was actually going on. There was just a bunch of dancing, rapping, and moving around. We had no clue what was actually going on plot wise.

I eventually just turned it off and told them to play with their cellphones.

You didn't see the film did you?

It does have a plot, a new character was injected into it to give it more of a plot.

So you haven't seen the film, you just jumped on the negative bandwagon. What a free thinker.

The Victoria character has been extended into the story, essentially a new character.

Victoria (also known as the White Cat) is a principal character in the musical Cats, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber based on T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Primarily a dance role with no solo singing parts, playing Victoria demands extensive ballet training and a high degree of flexibility.[1] The character is featured in a ballet solo ("White Cat Solo") as well as a pas de deux in the musical, and leads most of the ensemble dance routines.

The role was originated by Finola Hughes in the West End in 1981, and by Cynthia Onrubia on Broadway in 1982.

In the 2019 movie adaptation, the role is played by Francesca Hayward. Unlike her stage counterpart, this version is made the de facto protagonist of the film and has more of a singing role. She performs the film's sole new song "Beautiful Ghosts", as well as taking over Jemima's part in "Memory".

there is no way the white cat is a ‘new character’.

it’s a largely shapeless musical based on a set of nonsense poems. no wonder the vague attempts to make it into a movie suck.

my girlfriend saw the movie when it opened, i have no intention of sitting down and watching a musical at any point in my life. i value her opinion as, you know, she’s actually read all of t s eliot and knows what cats is. but keep talking about ‘bandwagons’ as if hating an andrew lloyd webber-inspired shitshow is really important to me.

ironically you have no reason to like it or see it, either, least of all for its merits as a film. as per usual, you just want an excuse to gawp at a few 20-something girls. you tend to mention this a lot so it makes you seem very silly when you talk derisively about ‘the critics’. oh those silly mean critics! i picture a man with pimples hissing because ‘his’ disney star is being panned in the papers.

dilbert any movie with 'female talent' gets a 7/10 from you but you whine about the 'conspiracies' of critics.

not being a stay-at-home-mum with an internet business selling leggings, i make it my business to avoid watching musicals.

I just think if you're going to critique something, like a film, in detail you should have actually seen it, not just be parroting other people's criticisms.

where did i critique a film in detail?

i said films need plots. it’s largely a requirement of the medium, you know, unless you’re watching some art house movie. Cats among all musicals is almost a uniquely bad source. it has no plot! this is hardly a ‘detailed critique’. no surprises that everyone panned it for being a largely disjointed series of songs with puzzling characters with no relation to a plot and gratuitous celebrity cameos. oh look it’s jason derulo!!!!

The Mandalorian - 6/10

I haven't seen it but the IMDB reviews aren't very good and someone I know didn't think much of it.

Probably needed more character development, Star Wars is usually weak on that.

we all know you’re mad about the mandalorian because there’s no princess leia in chains, for you to get your weekly quota of raised-pulse sexual non-contact.

It was a pretty good guess considering all the other Cats productions and what's been written about this one.

As far as I can tell, 'The Mandalorian' is carried primarily by baby yoda memes. It's interesting that Disney's dirtying it up with heads on spikes or whatever, but it's still Star Wars.

Leia never did anything for me.

Princess Aura on the other hand I can pin-point as one of the formative moments in my life.
