Some of us were sitting around watching TV, and this commercial came on.  It has been around for a few years, and I never paid much attention to it.  But, two of the people in the room said it was a racist commercial.

Now, I do not think it is racist.  However, if you put on the ultra politically correct glasses, I can see the argument.

Why is it racist? Because the beer is a light brown, and the guy is 'brown' as well?

You could say its racist because saying someone cant dance because of the color of thier skin can be considered racist because you think the skin dictates whether they can dance or not. But its not ultra racism just a bit of stereo typing.

It is racist against white people.

So that commercial qualifies as a civil-rights advocate.

Is it saying "White people are lesser beings than Blacks" (or vice versa)? No.

Is it saying "Black people are better beings than Whites" (or vice versa)? No.

Therefore, it's not racist.

If you were looking for racism in that commercial, you'd be likely to find it.

If you were just watching the commercial as you usually do, you wouldn't find any.

Looking for the racism you might notice he is wearing a suit, like a butler and hands the white guy a beer like a slave \ servant.

You might also think damn, white men can't dance, unless the black dude helps them out. In this case with beer.

Watching it like any other commercial and you don't over analyse it, and imo commercials shouldn't be over analysed anyway. They are 30 second clips designed to sell a product. Not make you question social and political values independently. Unless they are pushing for you to vote one way or another, that is.

What if the commercial were a little different?

What if the setting was some random factory?  What if the white guy was the one selling the beer?  In one hand he's got the beer and with the other he's fastening one thing to another thing with a tool.  the black guy is standing next to him, watching what he's doing.  then the white guy hands the beer to the black guy, and the black guy starts fastening the same things together with a tool.  then the white guy looks into the camera and says, "red stripe, helping our black friends work for over 70 years!"

Is that racist?

Again, no.

It's not saying that the white man is any better than the black man, or vice versa.

So, it's not racist.

I see your points, but then in your mind where does a stereotype end racism begin?
