...100 years ago, The Tunguska Event happened.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event

wikipedia wrote:

At around 7:17 a.m. local time, Tungus natives and Russian settlers in the hills northwest of Lake Baikal observed a column of bluish light, nearly as bright as the Sun, moving across the sky. About 10 minutes later, there was a flash and a sound similar to artillery fire. Eyewitnesses closer to the explosion reported the sound source moving east to north. The sounds were accompanied by a shock wave that knocked people off their feet and broke windows hundreds of miles away.

In scientific circles, the leading explanation for the explosion is the airburst of a meteoroid 6–10 kilometres (4–6 miles) above Earth's surface.
Just thought i'd share this with you(doubtless you've all heard of it before), this is one thing that really fascinates me.

Interesting fact about it hitting St Petersburg, but I doubt t would have. Cos the earth isn't standing still and just rotating on the spot, unless they did all the calculations and found out it would've hit St Petersburg even after taking into account the Earths Orbital Velocity around the Sun (and the Solar Systems Orbital Velocity within the galaxy itself )

That would've been a freakish sound - it would have been the sound of the shockwave passing through the ground beneath.

The air-shockwave would have been completely silent, I guess.

It was meant to mark my return to earth.

But, unfortunately, dad got his math wrong and it was precisely 65 years too early.

Now no-one ever believes me.

Oh, well, you're all off to hell in a hand-basket anyhoo...

A meteorite shook my city a couple of years ago, popular theory is it just brushed the atmosphere.  Those things are loud.

Today, 1/7/08, is the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin reading his theory to the Historical Society in London, promulgating the theory of evolution.

That was Dad again - you see, having got his calculations wrong with Tunguska, he, well... he, you know, get's a big angry... tends to take it out on you guys when it ain't your fault...

I keep telling him - "look it's fine, you really don't need to keep doing these things for my birthday - they all think it was later in the year any how..."

But, he never listens...

London was bombed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_July_200 … n_bombings

wikipedia wrote:

The 7th of July 2005 London bombings (also called the 7/7 bombings) were a series of coordinated bomb blasts, planned by Islamist extremists motivated by the 2003 invasion of Iraq, which hit London's public transport system during the morning rush hour. At 8:50 a.m., three bombs exploded within fifty seconds of each other on three London Underground trains. A fourth bomb exploded on a bus nearly an hour later at 9:47 a.m. in Tavistock Square. The bombings killed 52 commuters and the four suicide bombers, injured 700, and caused disruption of the city's transport system (severely for the first day) and the country's mobile telecommunications infrastructure. The series of suicide-bomb explosions constituted the largest and deadliest terrorist attack on London in its history.

I totally forgot. Everyone has just moved on here. Unlike certain 9/11 folks, who make topics every other day with things like "what were you doing on 9/11" and "NEVAR 4GET" all the time.

Just shows how different we really are.
