the current versions of windows DO NOT support 4GB of ram, they dont recognize it and they don't support it, they will only take 3GB.
The next version of windows (windows vista) will however support 4GB of Ram, altough it isn't needed for games at the moment, but i'm sure in 5-10 years time having 4GB's of ram will become a neccesary purchase.

Actually, if you research the official sources - e.g. Microsoft technet - they say XP Pro does support 4GB.
Cast the net a bit wider and the whole issue becomes very confusing:

Some say "2GB".
Some say "3GB".
Some say "4GB".
Some say "4GB but 1GB is reserved" (i.e. it'll use all 4GB but you'll only see 3GB).

Some say "4GB address space" (i.e. it'll take what ever amount of physical ram you want to chuck in, but each app sees 4GB).
Some say "4GB address space, but 2GB is reserved" (i.e. it'll take what ever amount of physical ram you want to chuck in, but each app sees 2GB).
Some say "4GB address space, but 1GB is reserved" (i.e. it'll take what ever amount of physical ram you want to chuck in, but each app sees 3GB).

I think the 'address space' stuff is where the confusion comes in - 'address space' and 'physical ram' are not the same thing...
