(Yeah I know this isn't a normal looking plane!)

I seem to see these on any jet engine. Swirls on the center part of the turbine. Anyone here know what purpose they serve?

Easily show which way the blades are turning.

They serve to hypnotize you before they suck you in and tear apart all your flesh and bones.

It's so you don't feel anything.  It's real nice of them to do that for you.

I sincerely hope you are kidding.

It's probably a Photoshop Phriday or something, but it is certainly a photo edit.  That is NOT a real aircraft.

You never know... it could be an extremely long range airliner with massive amounts of thrust...

These real turbines don't have spiny lines on them.

Yeh, or tell you if they are turning period.

Next time you see a propeller turning, look at the blades and it is easy to think they are not moving as they are going so fast. Kinda like when you look at a cars wheels on a freeway.

I imagine it's there to let you know when the turbines are spinning. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell, especially if other planes nearby are creating a lot of noise and you can't tell what sounds are coming from where.

I'm not entirely sure, though.

Gimme a reason why NOT to put em there, they look cool, they tell you if/where the blades are turning, they keep a web forum alive with discussion.

The Turbine "Spiral Logo" is a legal Occupational Health and Safety feature installed on most (if not all - where applicable) aircraft liners and turbine engines (whether commerical or private). It's as pointed out above, to determine if (and how fast) the turbine engine is spinning so ground control can perform their tasks safely. Back in the day there were accidents because Ground Personnel couldn't tell if a turbine was moving when it was at full speed and on ground level you canont tell engine noises apart. They also paint lines on propeller aircraft (back and front) and also helicopter rotors that can be seen from any direction for the same reason.

And yes, people have survived being sucked into those engines.

strictly speaking, the spirals are on the compressor, not the turbine

That, and even when the turbines aren't spinning, they still create a fuck load of noise themselves. It isn't just other aircraft that make it confusing.

Can alert people that the plane engines are on. See a full circle and take cover if you are close!
