It's not just old tech. The only RTX 3080 on Amazon is listed for $2999. The price of everything is inflated. This is Joe Biden's America.

It's a less scummy thing to do than, say, buying out essentials like hospital supplies or toilet paper and then selling them at a huge markup. Video card scalping is just people living in the system they lived with, making money off of luxury items.

If I was buying a new PC today I'd probably be better off looking for a reputable builder who already has a supply of those cards and won't charge you an extra $2000 for your 3080.

Trying to get that $120 one time license for Adobe Teacher and Student Acrobat. Online support said to call phone support. Phone support said you must go through a reseller. The plot thickens. Good thing: you can install the discounted version on two computers but only one at a time. Which I guess means you get to use it twice if your HD fails. A more charitable system than Office.

Okay so Adobe hit me with a $29.99 cancelation fee. Whatever. I managed to get the license for the student education through Amazon. The process to verify, install blah blah was painless and quick. Less than 20 minutes. Programs runs fine. I am pleased.

Now onto more software stuff: does anyone know a good program to explain blue screens? I know Windows has a built in system and I have used it before but I remember it not being easy to do and I don't remember it either. I rather use a program. I don't mind paying for software license.

Can use a quick search on MS to narrow down the problem. If I had more info I could probably toss some other guesses.

New SATA cables turns out that was the source of all my issues. SATA cable got bent by  another cable and so did the port it was in.

Good lord it has come to this.

My 2060 has always struggled with the setup I have now. Triple 4-K displays. GPU is at 10% browsing online. A lot of older games don't play nice with the displays. Newer games oftentimes crash due to the GPU being too weak. A handful of BoSD related to I believe the GPU overheating.

I would like to play Days Gone without crashes and other issues stemming from the GPU struggling to keep up. So I had to bite the bullet and buy this GPU. Since I have an Amazon Visa Card I was able to take an offer to pay it in equal installments interest free instead of dumping it on my card all at once. I have bought used cars for cheaper. I can't stomach dropping that much on my credit card at once even if I have the cash to cover the balance. A higher minimum payment for awhile is meh.

As for the PSU, the EVGA 650W I have in my PC is below the 750w required by the 3080. So I needed a bigger one. Very happy I got this new one since it is very short. Shorter than the thing it is replacing.

Why didn't you buy a whole new computer like I suggested?
I looked. I ran into two problems with this plan. First, I would still need to buy a whole new PSU for my main PC. I could get a big fancy one from a builder but I don't want to do that much part swapping with a prebuilt system. Those are usually not easy to work on and they do weird things. The second issue is that I still have spare parts that need to be put into things. Adding another computer on top of two partial builds is just adding junk to the world. And I am trying to downsize.

Okay, but can I have just one thing that makes me happy? I have been nonstop working to make others happy this year. Let me just have this. The Red Cross will still get their $20's.

Besides I have no backup PC right now. I gave my dad my spare FX system. My job took away my Macbook for system updates. The spare spare 650w PSU will complete a backup system I have parts for.

Finally, my last vape cart ended and I need to start getting back into sobriety mode for the fall harvest here at the Idaho potato farm my family has owned for 4 generations. This stuff will keep me busy while I go through the early cookie monster weeks of sobriety.

what's the regular price for that card? $1850 seems like a lot of money for a graphics card.

MSRP is $699 though whomever set that knew that the card would never sit at that price.

why is it so expensive? Is it solely related to chip shortages? Or is this a bitcoin mining demand surge thing?

My eldest brother sent me a link to a PC he purchased and it had a 20xx card in it. I had to ask him if it was a good deal because i'm so far out of the loop on specs and pricing.

Bitcoin mostly but the cHiP sHoRtAgE didn't help. Look at the prices of cards on ebay.

I can sell you a RTX 2060 6 GB. It is superfluous once I get the RTX 3080. I have other cards in boxes that need to get into systems first.

re: why?
Overpricing has been going on for years. It's not just due to pandemic chip shortages. High demand, limited availability. Retailers gonna retail.

Yeah, not how I'd have worded that. It's your money, take whatever hit you want. I'd like to add that I've seen 2060s going for $650+. Finding a $700 3080 seems absurdly optimistic.

IMO, screw all of that. You wanted me to play the game because it's a good zombie game. Bruh, my CPU barely tops minimum requirements.

Additionally, a GTX 1060 is listed in recommended. Your 2060 should have been sufficient. Maybe the game is just poorly optimized?

It's not just Days Gone that is the problem. The GPU struggles just managing the to run triple 4-K desktops.

If you're running at 4k I guess. But man, some of those prices are about at 3090 MSRP levels, it's ridiculous.

the whole semiconductor supply chain was fucked by the pandemic, afaik. cryto mining is definitely a big factor in the price gouging but ...

i think like 60% of all the world's semiconductors comes from one company in taiwan. not only have they had interruptions due to covid, but also entire production lines had to be torn down and set-up again to cope with shifting demand during the pandemic. and that includes catering to demands for semiconductors in things like cars or white appliances, not just GPUs.

due to the nature of the manufacturing, it's not easy to start-and-stop production on highly sensitive semiconductors. some of the major manufacturers have been trying to pivot to other semiconductor applications in response to pandemic demand shifts (cars, white goods, pc parts, etc) and it takes a significant amount of time and investment each time to do so.

perfect storm. no GPU or modern game is worth $2000. zero.

the problem is trying to play games on multiple 4k screens. why do you need 3x 4k screens to play a game? go ultra-wide or go 4k. it’s not like the eye can even take in all that pristine visual information at once.

you need like a $10k desktop to run those many pixels at top settings. vastly diminishing returns. i can’t think of a single game that is qualitatively worth the money.

you’re basically paying an additional $2000 so you can see the stubble detail on a minor character on your left screen, outside of your main FOV. meh.

When I play a game I don't project on all monitors. One monitor plays the game while the other two monitor are free for Youtube, Patreon, whatever. Running all of that plus games actually does put a big strain on the GPU.

A GPU upgrade will also help the PC better run 4K videos while again giving output to two other monitors. The 3080 will give me an obvious performance upgrade. I am someone who actually needs a 3080. I am not going to use it for Bitcoin or someone running it on a 1080p TV.

And I also put my multiple display setup to good use during my WFH phase. So it is not like I am pissing the money away on AR-15s or some other weirdo stuff. This has practical value.

People will quibble over 2 bucks vs. 4 bucks for a carton of eggs. We're here quibbling about $700 vs. $1200-$2000 video cards. Upper middle and wealthy will talk about expenses for the properties and strip malls they own. Matter of perspective, I guess.

If I won a $300 mil jackpot tomorrow I would still feel annoyed about spending $2000 for a $1000 video card, because it's being scalped way past MSRP. ATM I'm more concerned about housing prices.

no, i agree with you. 4k gaming even on one monitor will be a big power draw and a top-end GPU will help you.

i wouldn't pay $2k for a GPU but everyone has their own measure of value; it's your money; yada yada.

i also spent big on monitor(s) at the start of WFH and i know a set-up like that pays for itself very quickly.

but dropping $2.5k so that you can play one mediocre game is a pretty steep expense, by any metric. what's the total playtime, 30-40 hours? i think cocaine has a better price:minute ratio.
