Hey guys, very breifly for those of you that are interested.  I descided to move back to the states (am a scotsman who was brought up in the USA, went to Scotland when I was 18 and now I am going home).  That therefor meant I had to basically sell up everything in scotland and as a result I have nothing material to my name   TILL NOW!  I havent set on the rest of my stuff yet but the most important part has arrived and its up, and somthing else I didnt expect to arrive today did.

And the mystery box contained:

This is part of a much bigger project.  Those speakers that near the TV are all be it nice, some old Jamo's that are going as soon as I work out what to use in order to replace em.  Parts still to come/to be ordered are:

AV receiver
5.1/7.1 Surround sound speakers
Blu-ray Player
Cable obv
PS3 and Xbox 360 Elite

I was also considering a HTPC to connect up to it but that's a long way off, the receiver is what am most anxious to get now.

The TV is great, its 50:000:1 contrast and the colors are so vivid and bright, smooth edges and great blacks.  The only slight thing I have about it is those redish bits around the edges in certain lights look a bit naff tbh, dont get me wrong in the evenings it looks fantastic, it is a nice contrast, but under bright natural light it does look a bit out of place, but like I said the picture from the TV is that good I can forgive it that slight niggle.

The small bose unit you see btw is brilliant aswell.  It has excellent sound, and as you could see, its tiny.  I am putting that in my bedroom, but honestly it sounds so good you could put it on your main room, amazing sound, so much so I think I will go with Bose speakers to couple with the AV receiver.

Anyways thought I would share/gloat, I'll post up some pics of the other stuff if it arrives if anyone is interested.

ATLAST!

Edit:  Ya that is a sky+ box, dont ask, and all that shitty decor is going   Its meant to be a fucking lads pad!

Might I recommend something other than Bose? In every case, you can always find better speakers for the same price as Bose.

What's your budget for the receiver and speakers? Provide me with that I can can point you in the direction of a better setup.

Hmm, the whole thing was meant to stay below the $5000 mark (which I think is alright considering I need everything), the TV took $1500 of that so the Receiver and speakers would get I'd say $2-2500 of that budget.

I'll agree with Heggs here.

I have a Bose Set-up (Lifestyle Home Entertainment system with 5.1 surround [cube speakers]). Sure, sound in all rooms is nice, but you don't need bose to do that. With a little tweaking and a little more work, you can set the exact same thing up, only better, and cheaper. Also, the Bose is only an audio reciver, which means that sound through HDMI is impossible. Furthurmore, most TVs only have 1x HDMI input, which means you'll have to buy a HDMI switcher.

I'd say, go for an Audio/Video reciever, like those Onkyo's.

edit - where the fuck did that come from? You were already planning on getting an A/V...

Goddamn fucking page refreshed somehow and killed my entire post. I'm doing this in stages now, so bear with me. (Fuck fuck fuck)

Receivers: I like Onkyo and Denon the most. Both have outstanding quality, and Onkyo tends to have more features for the price.

Onkyo TX-SR805  $999
130 watts x 7, tons of inputs and outputs

Denon AVR-2308CI    $849
100 watts x 7

Home theater small speaker systems:

These will deliver good sound, and hide relatively easily, but they will not produce as full sound as the bigger speakers in the bigger enclosures.

Boston Acoustics MCS 130    $799
http://www.hometheatermag.com/compactsp … ndex1.html

Definitive Technology ProCinema 600   $799
http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/defin … 1321.shtml

Cerwin Vega! CVHD 5.1  $999
http://www.hometheatersound.com/equipme … vhd_51.htm

Orb Audio People's Choice   $1098  (I would personally recommend these. Orb Audio has fantastic sound reproduction at good prices.)
http://www.orbaudio.com/index.asp?PageA … ;ProdID=32
You can also choose less expensive versions with less speakers, but you should consider those if this is too much.

Athena Technologies WS-100 / WS-60 / WS-15 / AS-P4000   $1275
http://www.hometheatersound.com/equipme … sp4000.htm
Again, very good performance for the price. According to the reviewer, comparable to a system that costs 3 times as much.

Paradigm Cinema 330 Home Theater Speaker System  $1925
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/speake … ystem.html
Out of budget, but worth the extra money if you're willing to put it up.

I'll further update as I find more.

Home theater large speaker systems.

These will produce the best sound and typically have more power handling than the smaller speakers. The only downside is that they typically can get pretty big. At this price point, though, it's tough to find a system with some nice standing floor speakers as your fronts, but the smaller bookshelf speakers work just fine.

Onix x-series x-ls Speaker System $747 or $898
http://www.hometheatermag.com/compactspeakers/707onix/
If I didn't get the home theater system I have now, I would probably buy these. According to the review, even at double the price, they would still be an immense bargain. I would definitely recommend these and you should really consider them.

Tannoy HTS 200 Home Theater Speaker System   $999
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/speake … ystem.html

SVS SBS-01  $999
http://www.hometheatersound.com/equipment/svs_sbs01.htm
Impressive speakers worth looking into.

Crystal Acoustics THX-3D12 Home Theater Speaker System   $2000
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/articl … e_number=1
Yes, I know, clearly out of your price range, but if you were to spend maybe $500 more, you can really get something solid that'll knock your socks off.

Again, more to come.

throw out the Bose.
that TV is TOO nice to pollute the sound with Bose.

if you are looking to keep it at five grand, check out some Klipsch speakers, and a good receiver.

remember, if you treat the speakers correctly, they will last a lifetime......receivers need replacing every couple years anyway, so make sure you put the most into your speakers.

and always remember, center channel gets the priority

oh, and PLEASE stay away from home theaters in a box....you will get SO much more bang for your buck if you piece it together.

good luck, home theaters are very fun when they get all set up!

I do/did.  Am back in Scotland at the moment and I have a PS3 here (see sig, I think I have you on my buddy list btw poseidon  ), but am selling the 40GB european PS3 atleast, and then getting an 80GB version when MGS4 comes out (the pack thingy).  All my stuff over here has to go, its just too expensive to ship, I can replace it with better stuff for overall just a bit more so it was a done deal for me.

I'll take GTA 4 with me, I think am right in saying there is no region coding on games?

N thanks

Martyn

Update:

I managed to score a nice new Panasonic DMP-BD50 Blu-Ray Player for practically buttons, so that will be there for when I go back.

I was looking more in depth to your suggestion heggs (and indeed everyone's) and am fairly taken with the Onix x-series x-ls speakers, though I havent looked at them in any great detail.  I need some other suggestions though as far as the A/V receiver goes, if I go with the Onix speakers that frees up a good $1500 for an amp, and I have always bought into the, spend the money on a good source before you bother with speakers.

I also managed to score a deal where if I buy the Blu ray player at the same time, I can get $350 knocked off the basic list of this:

http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/prod … ID=5000300

Which I think would be a great deal.

I also had a play around with a Sony STR-DA4300ES and 5300, specifically the 5300 I mucked about with, I found it very intuative to use, its quite similar to the PS3 menu system and makes putting something as complex as an amp a lot easier I feel.  Good price on the 4300 here:

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/sto … ryId=27925

Though that is all I have looked at so far, and the Onkyo

I agree, the more you spend on a receiver the better. You should be able to get a good deal of years out of it, unless some new wild format comes about (something newer than HDMI, but I think that's here to stay at least for a little while).

The Yamaha receiver looks like a great deal at 350 off. I've heard some good things about their higher end models. If you were to go for a budget receiver (600 or less) I'd say only go with Onkyo (for the sheer amount of features they have compared to others in the same price range), but as you increase in price, you get some nice options. I'd say go for it.

Also, the Sony receiver looks pretty nice too. If you like the way it works, that's good, because, ultimately, you'll be the one using it. I think at those price points, you should be happy with whatever you get. I would recommend reading lots of reviews on them, though. Just so you get a good feel on where their strong and weak points are.
